Superman has Kryptonite. Green Lantern has the color yellow (if you’re a rookie). Batman has deep-seated psychological trauma. But what’s Spiderman’s weakness? According to this funny video by College Humor, it’s a lack of tall buildings. CollegeHumor’s Favorite Funny Videos What did you think of the video? Any other superheroes you can think of who have undiscovered weaknesses? Let us know in the comments. [Via YouTube]
N is for Nolan – After the enormous success of Christopher Nolan’s last movie The Dark Knight Rises, and the end of his Dark Knight Trilogy, everyone is keenly interested in Nolan’s next movie. And, as per usual for Nolan, he’s not saying a word about it. That doesn’t stop us from speculating, so here are a few things we know for sure about his new project, Interstellar. 1. The History – Apparently, Interstellar started in 2006 when Spielberg attended a Caltech workshop with physicist Kip Thorne. Thorne is well-known for his theories that wormholes could be used to travel…
, M is for Russ Meyer, who’s infamous for writing and directing a series of successful low-budget movies that featured campy humor, and busty female heroines. One of his most legendary was Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! Geek hero and comedian Patton Oswalt hired Jamie Follis (also known as “Sillof”) to imagine what would happen if Star Wars had been created by Russ Meyer. The result is “Faster, Empire! Strike! Strike!” It’s a series of custom action figures that swap the genders of the main Star Wars characters, and gives them a gloriously detailed and trashy Earth-bound backstory. Here are the…
Lightsabers are cool, but also dangerous. That’s what this video by gnarlytooth is all about. Imagine if the most irresponsible human being on the planet got a hold of the most dangerous – but elegant – weapon. That’s right, it’s a toddler with a lightsaber. Shot in a found footage style, it’s both funny and scary at the same time. And also cute. Because it’s a toddler. With a itty-bitty lightsaber. Next up, a kitten with a nuclear bomb. J is for Janitor – Ah, the janitor. Traditionally seen as one of the lowest occupations you can have, the janitor serves as a perfect analogy for the poor, downtrodden, and forgotten. As a result, elevating the janitor to superhuman levels is a great story arc. Maybe that’s why the lowly janitor is a common trope in sci-fi. Here are seven of the greatest janitors of all time. Melvin Ferd III (“The Toxic Avenger”) via horrornews.com 1. Melvin Ferd III (The Toxic Avenger) – Melvin was just your average 98-pound weakling who worked as a janitor at a health club…
H is for Hitchhiker’s. I’m a huge fan of Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and when the movie came out, I was just as excited as everyone else. In the end, I thought the movie was a mixed bag for fans of the novels, BBC radio, and TV mini-series. While they got a lot of things right, some elements felt wrong. Overall, though, it’s one of my favorite movies. I think it was a matter of expectations. You wait twenty years for a movie and it can never live up to it. Here are my five favorite bits…
G is for Gangsta Rap, and this is gangsa rap, Star Wars-style. You may have seen the original Flash video from 2000, but you may not have seen this special edition. And any excuse to watch it again is a good one. Written and animated by Thomas Lee, this video tells the original trilogy in hip-hop form. Yo, check it… What did you think of the video? “Firefly: The Animated Series” by Otis Frampton F is for Firefly, the beloved scifi western show that was cancelled after only one season. The show has become legendary since its cancellation, and fans were only made hungrier with the movie. They’ve consistently asked Joss Whedon for more, and the calls became louder after Veronica Mars fans successfully funding a movie with Kickstarter. Whedon has said he’s too busy to work on it right now, but hasn’t ruled out producing one in the future. Some have recommended ways to do it, and I think the best idea is to bring the…
Star Wars’ March Madness, I mean, This is Madness Tournament is coming to an end on April 9, and we’re here to take the pulse of the tournament so far. Here’s the bracket as it stands today: On the Light Side: Obi-Wan Kenobi made Han Solo drop his cargo Yoda sent Luke Skywalker back to the moisture farms R2-D2 used his jets to smoke Princess Leia Chewbacca ripped the arms off Ahsoka Tano Then at the Final Four: R2-D2 turned Chewbacca into a carpet Yoda made Obi-Wan into a ghost On the Dark Side: Darth Vader cut Darth Maul in…

Jurassic Park brought us the dream of bringing our favorite dinosaurs back from the dead through genetic engineering. Sadly, that dream hasn’t been realized, but the next best thing has been. Scientists have been able to use ancient seeds to bring prehistoric plants back to life. It seems that getting the actual genetic material for the plants wasn’t as hard as it was in the movie. No drilling mosquito stomachs in amber required. Turns out that scientists have found the burrows of prehistoric squirrels in northeastern Siberia. The burrows contained hundreds of thousands of seeds that had been preserved by…
B is for Bigfoot, an ape-like creature that some people believe inhabits forests in the Pacific Northwest region of North America. Bigfoot has been a huge part of US popular culture for decades. Here are five of Bigfoot’s biggest appearances in movies and TV. NOTE: After extensive research, it seems there’s a debate about the plural of bigfoot, but most agree that the plural of bigfoot is bigfoot, so that’s what I used in the title. 5. Harry and the Hendersons – In the 1987 comedy, a suburban family hits Bigfoot (Kevin Peter Hall) with their car and take him…
At last year’s Comic-Con, director Edgar Wright screened some test footage for his upcoming movie Ant-Man. Unlike most videos, though, he didn’t allow the video to be released to the general public. Any websites that uploaded the actual footage quickly got a takedown notice, so there was no reliable source we could link to. Now someone has made a copy of the footage that’s so crappy that maybe the studio will let it stay online. And I have to say, even this crappy, it looks pretty cool. Here it is: But just in case that one gets taken down too,…
Video game movies get a bad rap, and one of the most frequently cited disasters is the first: Super Mario Bros: The Movie. A hellish nightmare of cyberpunk and prehistoric confusion, the movie was a box office and critical disappointment. As bad as the movie was for viewers, the production was even worse. Here are nine things that explain why Super Mario Bros ended up such a crazy mess. 1. The Road to Casting Mario Was Surprisingly Long – The cast list to play Mario in the movie was surprisingly long and contested. Michael Keaton and Arnold Schwarzenegger were both…
In the classic episode of the original Star Trek series “Arena,” Captain Kirk is forced to do battle against a lizard-like alien Gorn. Now a new ad for Star Trek: The Video Game brings us a rematch between William Shatner and the Gorn. Of course, considering how much time has passed, it doesn’t quite go the same way. In case you haven’t seen the original or just want to see it again, here’s a clip from the original episode: Now here’s the ad: What did you think of the video? The Internet loves “What kind of whatever are you” quizzes. With the recent discussion on Green Lantern, I thought this would be a helpful way to find out which one you are. Are you a tough bruiser like Kilowog? An evil genius like Sinestro? Or a living planet like Mogo? This infographic helps you figure out which Green Lantern you are. [Via DC Comics via Geeks Are Sexy]
So if you’ve been following Star Wars’ March Madness, uh, This is Madness Tournament, I thought this would be a good time to calibrate. If you haven’t, now’s the time to get on-board. Here’s the bracket as it stands today: On the light side, there aren’t too many surprises: Han Solo shot out Lando, that slimy, double-crossing, no-good swindler. Obi-Wan won the duel against Qui-Gon Jinn – the learner is now the master Chewbacca beat Wicket like a stormtrooper helmet. R2-D2 disassembled C-3PO Leia strangled Padme. As an old-school Star Wars fan, I’m happy about that. The metal bikini wins…
The Internet exploded last week when Joshua Hale Fialkov, the new writer of Green Lantern Corps and Red Lanterns, left the job before it even started. The controversial part is that Bleeding Cool reported that Fialkov left because DC wanted to kill off African-American Green Lantern John Stewart. DC has since denied the rumors over Twitter, but in an age when killing off major heroes is rampant, I felt we should explain to DC why they must never even think of killing John Stewart. Ever. 1. DC Needs More Minority Heroes, Not Less – Let’s face it, there aren’t a…
The real Wonder Woman movie with Joss Whedon stalled, but this fan-made trailer is the next best thing. The trailer is set in World War II with Wonder Woman doing some serious hand-to-hand battles against Nazi hordes, and even shows WW using machine guns to take down a plane. The trailer stars actress Nina Bergman, and is directed by Jesse V. Johnson. The video’s Facebook page explains: “We filmed at the Fort MacArthur location in San Pedro, CA., once housing two huge naval artillery pieces intended to protect the California coast from Naval invasion. We thought the use of the…
One thing Trek fans love to do is make their own Star Trek movies. Some Star Trek videos are awesome. Some Star Trek videos are terrible. But one video is so bad Congress got involved. It seems that Congress got wind of a Trek parody made by no less than the Internal Revenue Service for a 2010 training conference. The video outraged Congressman Boustany, Chairman of the Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee. He sent a letter demanding that the IRS account for all the expenses for the video. At first, the IRS responded with a simple statement that they would…
With every new product, there comes a point when it’s released to the world. Corporations and manufacturers dream of that moment, and go through a lot of song and dance to make sure the product release goes smoothly. In some cases, they end up being a disaster. Fictional products from sci-fi movies are the same. Here are five cases where the new products end up causing havoc on their release. (WARNING: This post does have spoilers.) 5. The N-S5 (I, Robot) – In the 2004 science-fiction movie loosely adapted from Isaac Asimov’s short-story collection, I, Robot featured a world where…
If you’ve been around kids in the last few years, you’ve heard of Dora the Explorer. Her innocence, adventure, and Spanish skills have been ripe for parody. Back in June 2012, College Humor made a parody trailer imagining a grown-up Dora the Explorer as a cross between Lara Croft and James Bond. Starring Ariel Winter, the trailer was a huge hit, so much that College Humor went ahead and made it into a full-length movie. First, here’s the original trailer, if you didn’t see it: And here’s part one of the full movie: [Via Geeks are Sexy] What did you…
The Marvel movies leading up to Marvel’s The Avengers did a remarkable job of foreshadowing and intersecting with each other. But fans have wondered where they all fit in. Killer Klowns From Outer Space was just released on Blu-Ray, which gives me a perfect excuse to review one of my all-time favorite movies. I’m not afraid of clowns, but this movie made me understand why anyone would be. Just like all great B-movies, the title says it all. The movie is about a spaceship full of aliens that look like demented clowns that visit a small town and start killing people. It’s the execution that makes this movie great. The clowns use an assortment of clown and circus-related tools to terrify the populace. They cocoon victims in cotton candy,…

The rivalry between Thomas Edison and Nicola Tesla is the stuff of legends in the scientific world. They fought over nothing less than power: both competing to create the standard of electricity in the United States, DC vs. AC. Tesla accused Edison of stealing his patents. Edison accused Tesla of making dangerous technology. Tesla wanted to distribute electricity for free. Edison fought to make as much money off it as he could. Edison won the battle in real-life, but now Tesla has a second chance to redeem himself in song. Watch Edison and Tesla compete in the latest Epic Rap…

On June 3 2011, Wang Kang (a 25-year-old office worker in Shanghai, China) walked into his office building wearing a homemade Iron Man suit. Designed after the original Iron Man suit that Tony Stark built in the desert in the original movie, it’s made of foam, wires, tubes, and an arc reactor made of glass. After three months of work and 3,000 yuan (about $460), Kang surprised his co-workers and the streets of Shanghai with it. Check it out. [Via Oddity Central] What do you think of the suit? The Predator is an iconic movie monster, but it wasn’t always that way. Few fans have seen the original Predator design, which was scrapped shortly after the movie started production, and re-designed by Stan Winston. Fewer still have heard the story of how Jean-Claude Van Damme got involved and ultimately left the movie. Now this short documentary tells how JCDV and the Predator parted ways. One thing that I have found most annoying about the movie Avatar is the chorus of praise for its “scientific accuracy.” It’s only a movie, but I don’t know of any movie short of Star Trek that has tried so hard to convince its fans that it’s based on real science, and fallen so short. So I thought it would be useful to just make an archive showing that the movie is not science-fiction; it’s science mixed with fantasy. This time, we’re going to talk about the Na’vi. The Na’vi are a sentient species that are more powerful than human…
