Read this Disclosure Day movie review to find out if it’s worth watching. Steven Spielberg returns to the sci-fi thriller genre with an alien conspiracy movie that promised to redefine the summer blockbuster. There was a lot of anticipation since the first Super Bowl trailer. Starring Emily Blunt and Josh O’Connor, the film follows a whistleblower and a psychic meteorologist racing to expose decades of government cover-ups surrounding UFO encounters and alien contact. However, despite Spielberg’s pedigree and a strong cast, Disclosure Day ultimately misfires. The ambitious themes of faith, humanity, and extraterrestrial life are never fully realized — leaving audiences with a film that feels more like a missed opportunity than a modern sci-fi classic.

    About Disclosure Day

    • Directed by Steven Spielberg
    • Written by David Koepp
    • Synopsis: “If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you? This summer, the truth belongs to seven billion people. We are coming close to … Disclosure Day.”
    • Release date: June 12, 2026
    • Starring: Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo, Wyatt Russell, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Elizabeth Marvel, Hettienne Park, Tommy Martinez, Gabby Beans, Jeremy Shamos, Brandon Wilson, Priyanka Kedia, Lora Lee Gayer, and Lance Archer

Warning: Avoid spoilers for Disclosure Day by skipping to the end

What Happens in Disclosure Day (2026)?

A medium close-up shows a wide-eyed Margaret Fairchild (Emily Blunt) in a tan sweater holding a glowing cylinder toward the camera, flanked by Santiago (Tommy Martinez) and Dr. Daniel Kellner (Josh O'Connor) in a dimly lit room.

We broke down a lot of this in our article Everything We Know About The Frightening Disclosure Day Movie. In the movie, the world is on the brink of World War III. Daniel Kellner (Josh O’Connor), a cybersecurity specialist, steals alien technology and classified files from the Wardex Corporation. The files detail human-alien contact stretching back to the Roswell incident. He is then hunted by Wardex CEO Noah Scanlon (Colin Firth).

Meanwhile, Margaret Fairchild (Emily Blunt), a Kansas City meteorologist, begins experiencing impossible abilities. Her latent psychic powers are awakened after a childhood alien abduction. Eventually, Daniel and Margaret are drawn together by a shared bond — used as conduits by the aliens to deliver a message to humanity. Plot ExplainedThe Direct
Finally, the two break into Margaret’s old television studio. A global broadcast is executed, presenting undeniable evidence of alien encounters and decades of government deception.

The revelation shocks the world. As a result, the outbreak of World War III is instantly halted. A living extraterrestrial — freed from Wardex custody — is then revealed, carrying a message for all of humanity.

Who are the Main Characters, and How is the Acting?

A close-up from Disclosure Day shows a wide-eyed Dr. Daniel Kellner (Josh O'Connor) in a hoodie and dark jacket, holding out a small object in his right hand. He is flanked by Hettienne Park as Serena and Eve Hewson as Jane Blankenship in a dimly lit, blue-toned outdoor setting at night.

All the actors do a great job, but a few stand out. First, Emily Blunt does a wonderful job as the incredulous aspiring weathergirl Margaret Fairchild. Next, Josh O’Connor shows a wide range as the conflicted and determined whistleblower Dr. Daniel Kellner. But it’s Colin Firth who really shines as the amoral director of Wardex, Noah Scanlon.

Unfortunately, Eve Hewson spends most of the movie wide-eyed and crying as Daniel’s girlfriend Jane Blankenship. But she does get a terrifying scene as a remote-controlled assassin. Colman Domingo is equal parts terrifying and comforting as the enigmatic rebellion leader Hugo Wakefield. Finally, Wyatt Russell plays Margaret’s worrying, aspiring-musician boyfriend, Jackson.

Spielberg assembles a wonderful cast, and they help carry the emotional moments well.

Is Disclosure Day (2026) Technically Well Made?

An intense, low-angle shot shows a terrified Margaret Fairchild (Emily Blunt) clinging to the side of a red vehicle, while Dr. Daniel Kellner (Josh O'Connor) looks on anxiously from a ladder on a moving cargo train in the background of the sci-fi film Disclosure Day.

Disclosure Day is a master class in filmmaking. Under Spielberg’s skilled hand, the movie is equal parts beautiful and moving. John Williams returns with the director to score the film, and his music perfectly complements the film. Production Designer Adam Stockhausen and Cinematographer Janusz Kaminski give the film the look of a multi-million dollar blockbuster. The camera perfectly follows the action in spectacular car chases and zooms in on stunningly emotional scenes.

Which is why it’s so confusing that the CGI was laughably bad. It really takes you out of the film. In one scene, a cardinal flies through the window, and my son whispered, “That bird is fake.”

Unfortunately, the screenplay by David Koepp is the worst part. The plot has massive plot holes and tries hard to make the mundane look spectacular. In this age of deepfake technology, the ending calls for a level of trust and belief that borders on mass hysteria. The final moment is incredibly frustrating as it builds up to the conclusion and ends on a cliffhanger

What’s Good and Bad in Disclosure Day (2026)?

    The Good

    • Emily Blunt is the emotional core — her character’s growing abilities create the film’s strongest thread.
    • Janusz Kaminski’s cinematography is fluid and agile, with standout moments like a gorgeous farmhouse oner and a car-meets-train action sequence.
    • Spielberg keeps things absorbing with conspiratorial thrills and dazzling set pieces.
    • It feels like a genuine passion project, not just another summer blockbuster.
    • Asks big, interesting questions about faith, truth, and what alien disclosure would mean for humanity.
    • Josh O’Connor grounds the outlandish plot, and Colin Firth makes a compelling villain.

    The Bad

    • Sluggish pacing and a surprisingly flat ending after a long buildup.
    • The script trips over itself trying to explain everything.
    • The alien conspiracy premise feels like a 1990s relic — nothing here feels new.
    • Religious themes are explored bluntly rather than with nuance.
    • Colin Firth’s antagonist is underwritten despite strong potential.

Final Verdict: Should You Watch Disclosure Day (2026)?

Disclosure Day, while marketed as a significant Hollywood event and a reality reset regarding alien encounters, ultimately falls short of its ambitions. It showcases mid-tier Spielberg, providing entertainment rooted in his craft and Emily Blunt’s performance. However, its attempts at profundity go unfulfilled, diminishing its impact compared to Spielberg’s earlier work like A.I.: Artificial Intelligence and Close Encounters. The film tries to weave overlapping themes of belief in aliens, God, and humanity into a complex, at times contradictory narrative structure.

    Overall: Watch Disclosure Day

If this had been any other director, I’d say skip it. But while Spielberg’s skills are surprisingly underutilized here, it’s still worth watching. I’m giving Disclosure Day 3.5 out of 5 stars.
