A New Film by Steven Spielberg Will Rival Star Wars and the Avengers

Steven Spielberg Event Film Set for Summer 2026, According To Universal

Just forty years after the release of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Steven Spielberg is currently in production on what sounds like a major motion picture. The renowned filmmaker has announced that his next picture, a “new original event film,” will be released on May 15, 2026. The script is being written by David Koepp, who wrote the scripts for Spielberg’s Jurassic Park (1995) and War of the Worlds (2005). Reportedly the director is the source of the idea.

Although Variety doesn’t yet know the exact plot of the movie, it seems to have something to do with UFOs. One has to assume it’s a big summer blockbuster-type movie given that Koepp is writing it and that it opens in the middle of summer, right between blockbusters like Avengers: The Kang Dynasty (currently scheduled for May 1, 2026) and The Mandalorian and Grogu (currently slated for May 22, 2026).

Apathy has mainly greeted Spielberg’s last several attempts at making the kind of movie he helped to invent. In July 2016, he released The BFG, and in March 2018, he released Ready Player One. Although Koepp co-wrote Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which he had a huge summer blockbuster in 2008, it didn’t receive the same level of praise as his prior Indiana Jones films. You have to travel back nearly 20 years to 2005’s War of the Worlds to find the last genuine Steven Spielberg summer blockbuster, and even then, one could argue that it fell short of true Spielberg levels of cult status. It’s been a hot minute.

Although he needs no introduction let’s remember Spielberg has won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Schindler’s List, which took home a whopping seven statues, as well as Best Director for Saving Private Ryan. The Fabelmans, his most recent movie, was distributed by Universal in 2022 and was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress, Best Picture, and Direction.

It’s great that he’s returning to the summer film festival circuit. Opening a film between the two biggest franchises on the earth is none other than Steven Spielberg, who is arguably the greatest filmmaker of all time. It’s difficult to remain calm in the face of such excitement.

Boba Fett vs. Iron Man would be awesome, though. If that was verified, I think I would go.

Are you excited to see Spielberg return to Summer Blockbusters? Let us know in the comments below!

It would be nice to see another grand adventure from him. Raiders is still the perfect adventure film even 40+ years later.
