Skyline is a deeply-flawed movie made worse by its wasted potential. It’s a movie with a solid cast, extraordinary special effects, and a unique alien invasion that proceeds to make all of them boring. The movie is about a handful of people, mostly a group of partying young people, who end up trapped in a high-rise condo during an alien invasion. Eric Balfour plays a New York artist lured by his best friend Donald Faison to L.A. for a birthday party, and a chance to work in the movie business. After a wild party, the two (and their significant others) are…
In last week’s “Caption This” contest, we asked you to caption the infamous “Spock and the Unicorn Dog” photo. While the results were all awesome, we decided the winner is Alex Cavanaugh, who came up with the following caption: Stay tuned for another “Caption This” contest, and thanks to everyone who contributed! Now that Star Wars is part of the Disney family, Princess Leia is now officially a Disney Princess. This funny video from AVByte shows Snow White, Ariel, Belle, Cinderella, and Aurora welcoming Leia and explaining the ropes of being a Disney Princess. And, of course, they do it in song. What did you think of the video? What else needs to change now that Leia is a Disney Princess? [Via YouTube] Please use the buttons below to tell your friends about this post. While a lot of superheroes have been hitting theaters lately, not a lot of minority superheroes have made the trip to the big screen. It turns out that’s changing with Captain America 2: Winter Soldier. None other than the legendary Falcon will be making an appearance, played by Anthony Mackie. Mackie (who co-starred in The Hurt Locker) gave some interesting details in an interview on Ain’t It Cool News about his role. The big question everyone wanted to know was, “Does Falcon fly in Captain America 2?” Anthony Mackie kept it simple: “I will have wings. I will be able to…
When it was announced that Disney and Lucasarts would produce a new Star Wars movie without George Lucas, the Internet went wild. One of the first questions was who would direct it, and lots of big and geek-friendly names floated. But it didn’t take long for the honeymoon to end. We all expected it to be hard to land one of the big names, but what we didn’t expect was indifference and even outright hostility from some of the candidates. Just recently, Joss Whedon (another one of the dream directors for Star Wars: Episode 7) has confirmed he’s not even…
While the original Star Trek: The Original Series series had a lot of things going for it (a great cast, engaging characters, thought-provoking science-fiction, resonant themes), I don’t think anyone would list “big budget” among them. Nowhere was it more evident than in “The Enemy Within,” when an alien creature was depicted by a little dog in a fur coat and a horn. That’s why this classic image is this week’s “Caption This” contest. Respond in the comments. The best caption will be chosen next week and turned into a handy image suitable for giggling. What caption would you give…
Before the Enterprise returned to television in Star Trek: The Next Generation, the actors had to do the more mundane things that need to be done in any TV show. One of them was the screen tests for the make-up and costumes. In TNG, this got complicated with the more fantastic elements like Data’s android make-up, Troi’s black contact lenses, and Geordi’s VISOR. In this video, we get to see the early stages of Geordi, Data, and other cast members of the Enterprise crew modeling their looks for the camera. Keep an eye out for alternate versions of Data’s hair…
Back in 1999, an unknown artist created the persona of a mad scientist named Doctor Steel, star of a series of comedy videos and music videos on YouTube, and self-published a couple of awesome albums. His signature song is the insane anthem to world domination, “Back and Forth.” Doctor Steel has since retired, but he’s left a legacy behind. What did you think of the video?
Just a few days ago, we reported on a story about a terminally-ill Star Trek fan known only as “Dan” who wanted to see Star Trek Into Darkness before he died. In an extraordinary turn of events, director J.J. Abrams himself put together a rough cut for Dan to see in a private screening. Well, that feel-good story has a bittersweet ending: The Hollywood Reporter reports that Dan passed away shortly after watching the movie. THR also published some more details of this awe-inspiring story. In the initial story, Dan’s identity and much of the events of the screening were…
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the Eighth Dimension is a sci-fi comedy that is the definition of a cult classic, and is a true love-it or hate-it movie. Among the most vocal fans is Kevin Smith, who held a screening for Buckaroo Banzai, and called it one of the most influential movies of his life. But there are a lot of other Blue Blaze Irregulars out there, and many of them have put their love of Banzai into their work. Here are 10 examples of how Buckaroo Banzai has made its way into various movies and TV shows in…
This commercial by GE called “On the Move” shows a robot invasion, bound for something by GE. It doesn’t really have anything to do with GE, but what it does have is a smorgasbord of robots, both fictional and real. Some of the robotic cameos are subtle, some are not. But it’s all fun. For an overview, Business Insider has a good list of many of the robots, which includes the original (or copies of): KITT from Knight Rider Robbie from Forbidden Planet Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation GERTY from Moon Also clones of Honda’s ASIMO and a…
Stumbled across this very interesting Entertainment Weekly interview with Peter Weller on the set of Robocop in 1987. We get to see him being fitted with his costume, explain why he has tissues in his ears, and his thoughts on the movie’s message. I thought Weller actually did a pretty good job explaining why the original Robocop stands the test of time as both an action movie and sci-fi commentary. Now here’s today’s Peter Weller along with some of the other cast and crew discussing the impact of Robocop, as well as how he worked on movements, the problems with…
Here’s your feel-good story of the day: Thanks to a lot of help, a dying Trekker managed to see Star Trek Into Darkness on Saturday. It all started on Reddit, where a user named 1deeyut posted a desperate plea for his 41-year old friend Dan to see Star Trek Into Darkness. Apparently, Dan is at the end of a long bout with cancer. After going through chemo and a bone marrow transplant, his doctors discovered an entirely different tumor, and Dan only has weeks to live. His dying wish was to see Star Trek Into Darkness before he died. Of…
On January 3, 1993, the Star Trek series Deep Space Nine premiered with its first episode, “Emissary.” To celebrate the twentieth anniversary of this now classic series, here are twelve things you may not know about DS9 and this episode. 1. Deep Space Nine is a Western – It was NBC president Brandon Tartikoff who first came up with the idea for DS9. Tartikoff suggested the new Star Trek show should be an outer-space version of The Rifleman, a western about a man and his son who arrive at a lawless town in the middle of nowhere. Many of the…
Well, 2013 is upon us, but some of our posts from 2012 are still going strong. Which ones have stood the test of time? Here are the five most popular posts from December 2012. 1. Map of the USA ala’ Lord of the Rings – This one was about a map someone drew of the United States in the style of a map of Middle Earth from Lord of the Rings, complete with massive inaccuracies and notable landscapes. Apparently, this post from April exploded because of interest from the new movie, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. I still think it’s…
There’s this new thing that I’d never heard about called “ransomware.” Basically, it’s a lot like a virus, except instead of stealing your information, wiping your hard drive, and showing goofy pictures, it holds your computer for ransom. Here’s the description on the New York Times about what happens when you get ransomware on your PC: Researchers say criminals now use victims’ Internet addresses to customize ransom notes in their native tongue. Instead of pornographic images, criminals flash messages from local law enforcement agencies accusing them of visiting illegal pornography, gambling or piracy sites and demand they pay a fine…
Hawkeye was a valuable asset in Marvel’s The Avengers with his keen eyesight, deadly accuracy, and multi-purpose arrows. But what would happen if he ran out of arrows? When Jeremy Renner hosted Saturday Night Live, they answered that question in a hilarious sketch that goes something…like this. What did you think of the video? There are action figures for everything you can imagine. Of course, there are action figures for cartoon characters, but also characters from movies and TV shows, famous athletes, and even celebrities. Heck, even Saddam Hussein got an action figure. But there’s one group who hasn’t gotten their due. It’s time to celebrate the real heroes: scientists. That was the goal of Russell Gawthorpe (Datazoid) on DeviantArt, and he created this poster of “heroes of science” action figures. Click below to enlarge: Here’s what the artist had to say: These little guys took between 40 minutes and 2 hours each, totalling…
I know, I know, this is hot on the heels of the “honest trailer,” but we’re not picking on The Dark Knight Rises. Honest. I thought it was a great movie, even though it had its flaws. But this video of “Everything Wrong With The Dark Knight Rises” by CinemaSins is too good to keep. This one tackles seventy-two of the biggest problems, from minor nitpicks to major plot holes. (Warning: Contains spoilers for the movie, as well as point out things that will change the way you see the movie…forever.) [Via Crushable] What did you think of the video? Can you…
Lots of people have built a model of Doctor Who’s trusty space-time transport, the TARDIS. Some have been really good. Some make sounds and light up. But this one by tech writer Greg Kumparak, I think, blows them all away. He built a really cool model of the TARDIS, added a light and sounds, and decided that wasn’t enough. What he wanted was to open it up and see inside. And of course, we all know that the TARDIS is bigger on the inside. That’s why he created an augmented reality app that shows the inside of his model TARDIS…
There’s no better way to illustrate the ridiculous, illogical, and sexist poses of women in comics than to draw men the same way. That’s the mission of a unique Tumblr called The Hawkeye Initiative. Its creator Gingerhaze describes its mission this way: “how to fix every Strong Female Character pose in superhero comics: replace the character with Hawkeye doing the same thing.” Once again, numerous artists have risen to the challenge. Here are some of the best examples: [Via The Hawkeye Initiative via Girls Read Comics] What do you think of the Hawkeye Initiative? [Image Source: Tumblr] Please use the…

(Warning: This article contains spoilers for the Matrix Trilogy) While The Matrix remains a classic scifi action flick, the second and third movies in the series were a disappointment to many fans of the first film. Specifically, many people were upset by the developments in Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolution that revealed that the Machines orchestrated the prophecy of Neo, and that his role as the One was intended to enslave humans, not free them. On a recent press tour for the Wachowski brothers’ ( the writer/director team of the Matrix trilogy) new movie Cloud Atlas, Lana Wachowski (formerly Larry…
Marvel writer Mark Millar was given the job of taking Fox’s Marvel X-Men franchise, and turning it into the powerhouse of Disney’s Marvel movies like The Avengers. He recently stated that he’s developed a long-range plan to develop at least ten movies based off of stories from the X-Men franchise. There’s no shortage of great stories to be told in the X-Men Universe. Here are 10 of them: 10. Days of Future Past – This story is already being told in the next X-Men movie, but it bears repeating, because it’s considered one of the best. In this classic storyline,…
Anyone who enjoyed the classic cult scifi comedy The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai will get a kick out of this music video created by a Mexican band called She’s a Tease. The video recreates the memorable closing credits of Buckaroo Banzai, where the cast marched through an LA aquaduct. It’s not an exact replica, but it really captures the feel, and just the fact that they even bothered to mimic an obscure eighties movie put a smile on my face. Hong Kong Cavaliers are everywhere. In case you haven’t seen it, here’s the closing credits to Buckaroo Banzai: Now here’s…
The latest in the “honest trailer” series by Screenjunkies takes on The Dark Knight Rises). I’m a big fan of the movie, but I have to admit there are some plot holes. This trailer tackles some big ones. (Warning: Contains spoilers for the movie, as well as questions that will change the way you see the movie…forever.) What did you think of the trailer? Seriously, how’d Batman get the bat-symbol on that bridge, anyway? Let us know in the comments. Hot on the heels of the Back to the Future Nike sneakers comes the Back to the Future Hoverboard from Mattel, based on the hoverboard in Back to the Future II. It must have seemed like a great idea from Mattel’s perspective, but it’s turned into kind of a disaster. It sounds good on paper. Mattel worked with some of the movie’s crew like Bob Gale, the co-producer and co-writer of the movie, and the movie’s SFX supervisor, Michael Lantieri to create a duplicate of Marty McFly’s hoverboard. At first glance, it looks good. It’s lifesize. It has the…
We haven’t talked about the CW’s new superhero show Arrow on this blog, which is a crime I plan to rectify right now. We’ll be talking more in the coming weeks, but I figure we should kick off with a solid review. Arrow is a great show. Oh…well, I should probably say more than that. Arrow is an adaptation of the DC superhero Green Arrow. The last new superhero TV show was NBC’s The Cape…and we all know how that turned out. I admit to being a little skeptical of Arrow when they first announced it as a spin-off from…
If you’ve ever wanted to see a baby in a martial arts fight with a stuffed animal, today is your day. This video “Dragon Baby” turns an innocent little boy into a Kung Fu warrior. No relation to Bruce Lee, so maybe he’ll grow up to do another movie without dying on the set. Yeah, I went there. [via YouTube]
