On February 1, Netflix aired its first original television series, House of Cards. House of Cards is a political drama, not a scifi show, but it heralds great things for the science fiction community. Here are seven reasons why House of Cards is good for sci-fi television. 1. Netflix is the Biggest Name in On-Demand Streaming – Netflix is the highest-profile streaming service for television and movies. While other streaming services like Crackle have created their own shows, Netflix has given online shows more legitimacy. With over three million subscribers, Netflix has a huge audience with a voracious appetite for…
We’ve seen some thrilling lightsaber battles in the Star Wars movies, and I’ve always wanted to be in a lightsaber duel. This fan made video by the Stunt People does the next best thing. It shows an awesome lightsaber battle from a new perspective – the combatants. Starring Gary Ripper as Darth Vader and Eric Jacobus as a Jedi, we see from their POV as they wage an epic battle. A while back, we blogged a cartoon about Admiral Snackbar. Well, it turns out that there is a real Admiral Snackbar. And this time, it’s not a trap! It’s a snack! It’s Admiral Snackbar’s Chocolate and Confectioneries in Vancouver, Brtish Columbia. They have a Tumblr and a Facebook page. Here’s some of their delicious and nerdy wares. In many movies, there are characters great and small. Sometimes, movies wrap up all the loose ends, and sometimes they don’t. You might not even notice, but there are a lot of scifi movies where characters just disappear. What happened to them? Here are seven characters whose fates are never explained in their movies. WARNING: This post has spoilers for The Thing, Mystery Men, Jurassic Park, Iron Man 2, Stargate, The Mask, and Star Wars. 1. Nauls (The Thing) Nauls (T.K. Time travel is a common staple of scifi movies. Most of these movies fall into three categories: fixed timelines, dynamic timelines, and multiverse. This infographic illustrates and explains the three categories beautifully. Click to enlarge: What did you think of the infographic? What other movies used these types of time travel? One of the great geek debates for the last generation has been Star Trek versus Star Wars. We can all debate which is better in terms of characters, story, realism, and fun forever. However, there are some real world numbers we can crunch to see which franchise is best. Which franchise has more movies? Which franchise sold more toys? All these numbers and more are analyzed in this infographic by Hark. See who wins by clicking below: [Via Blastr via Trek News via Hark] Do you agree with the infographic? In an interview about her work on the movie Thor, Natalie Portman had some choice words to say about her prior film roles. “I’ve worked on several large-scale productions, and this is the first one that I’ve really felt this level of intensity and focus on performance from a director. I find it unique to have so much emphasis on performance, story and detail, and I feel that all of that only makes the big, entertaining moments more real—and, in a way, more entertaining.” Gee, wonder what large-scale productions she could be talking about? Oh, snap. [Via Comic Book Movie.com]
Jest.com created a series of twelve fake newspapers imagining what headlines might look like in Gotham City during the events of The Dark Knight Rises. Here are our five favorites. Primer is now available on Netflix streaming, so if you’re a Netflix subscriber, now’s the time to watch it. You can also see it on Hulu (with commercials). This is one of my all-time favorite movies. There’s a faction that believes watching Primer without knowing anything is the best way to watch it. Another faction believes spoiling everything is the way to go so you can understand it. I believe some of the story should be a secret, but a little knowledge will prepare you. It’s not your normal movie. Here are five things that will help. 1. In the…
Above: The Death Star The White House made a calculated mistake with its new website, We The People, which allows anyone to create petitions for the US government to review. The idea was sound: make a more modern and transparent method of participating in government policy. The mistake they made was in underestimating the Internet. That’s because the Internet is a powerful force, just like the Internet’s love of Star Wars, and the two combined to create an unstoppable force. They created a petition for the US government to build a real Death Star. In part, the petition read: “We…
One of our favorite Twitter feeds is Death Star PR. It attempts to put a positive spin on the Empire’s evil activities. Now the Twitter feed has become a hilarious web series. Created and Written by Robbie Boland, Death Star PR follows the Public Relations Division as they attempt to clear the Empire’s bad name, and avoid getting force-choked to death in the process. Disney’s John Carter was a huge box office failure, but adapting the original novel Princess of Mars had a long and torturous history. While Burroughs’ John Carter of Mars book series was massively popular for the last century, no one would attempt to adapt it into a movie because it would be so expensive to go live-action. It’s a little known fact that we might have had the first John Carter movie in 1936. Famed Warner Brothers director Bob Clampett attempted it with animation. He used innovative techniques like oil painting to create dynamic test footage. Unfortunately, the project folded…
Christopher Nolan has had a relatively short but brilliant career with a string of critical and commercial successes such as Inception, Memento, The Prestige, and of course the Dark Knight trilogy. Pablo Fernandez has created a stunning tribute to Nolan’s work by doing stylistic interpretations of classic images from Nolan’s movies, all animated to the music of Looper. Star Trek Into Darkness has a cool new app available for iOS and Android. It’s basically a blatant ad for the movie, which I wouldn’t normally like, but this app has two things going for it. First, I actually am looking forward to Star Trek Into Darkness and pore obsessively over the trivial stuff they leak out anyway. Second, it’s not the usual promotional movie app that just shows everything you could get from the official website, but on a much smaller screen and taking up space on your phone. By performing various tasks in the Star Trek Into Darkness…
If there’s one thing we’ve learned from science fiction is that clothing will be radically transformed. T-shirts, jeans, the little black dress, these will all go the way of powdered wigs and leopard skins. At least, that’s what you’d believe if you watched enough sci-fi movies. In the near and distant future, there are some common themes. To prepare you, here are seven clothing trends you’ll be wearing…if you live that long. 1. Overalls ETA: 25 Years in the Future Examples: Metropolis, 1984, Brazil When the dystopian totalitarian government takes over, overalls will become standard issue. Available only in one…
[Above Image: Chris Kattan as Bane] Even if you didn’t watch the Super Bowl, you may have heard about the thirty-four minute blackout that occurred at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and stopped the game. While many people have speculated on the cause of the blackout, a video has emerged that finally puts the question to rest. Thanks to College Humor and Chris Kattan, we know the truth: Bane from The Dark Knight Rises is responsible. That’s right, Bane was the Super Bowl’s reckoning. We watched him torture an entire nation, and then once the game was ashes, you had his permission to…
Super Mario Bros: The Movie was the first videogame adaptation, and it was such a disaster that it was almost the last. This movie doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to begin with, the result of having gone through several screenwriters, the studio demanding changes right on the set, and then having been massacred in the editing room. I’ll be posting an article with some interesting facts about the filming of this movie, but first let’s talk about the movie itself. Specifically, nine really bizarre things that stand out. 1. The Opening Sequence – The opening sequence sets up…
We could be doing a sports or football related post that’s somehow related to the Super Bowl, like almost every other SEO-driven blog on the Internet today, but we won’t. Because I’m a loner, Dotty…a rebel! Instead, we’re bringing you a different blog trend that’s being worn to death, the “hey, if Disney is making Star Wars, it would be like…” meme. This video is pretty good. See the original Star Wars trilogy, featuring songs by Randy Newman, new cast members like Chris Tucker, and the Mouse himself in subtle cameos. Brought to you by Smosh. Now if you’ll excuse…
I’ve made no secret that I consider the Star Wars prequels to be inferior to the original, and the original trilogy is right up there with the all-time great movies. But I have to admit that the current generation has a far different view of the prequels than I do. I never thought I would see anyone convince me that the prequels are better than the originals…because they’re not…but this video comes close. Made by Parker Jakobowhitz, it shows two geeks debating the movies; one for the original trilogy, the other for the prequels. They both make arguments and counter-arguments…
We’ve seen the war between humans and robotic forces in Space: Above and Beyond, The Matrix, and the Terminator franchise. But what about aliens versus machines? This short film depicts a scene in an alien war against its own mechanical creations. And the most amazing part is that R’ha was written, directed, and animated by one man, 22-year old film student Kaleb Lechowski. And he did it in seven months. He’s already working on expanding it into a feature film, which I would pay to see. Something tells me Hollywood will be knocking on his door before he graduates. [Via Kaleb Lechowski via Vimeo…
We’re geeks, but we’re not nerds. It’s an important distinction. Geeks are intelligent, and into scifi and comic books, but nerds have an awkward appearance, poor social skills, and extreme social ostracism to go with it. The nerd has become a well-known stereotype in movies and TV, and portrayals range from the subtle to the outright cartoonish. On the cartoonish end of the spectrum, there are a few that stand out. It takes a special kind of nerd to roll all the nerd stereotypes into one character, and these are seven that have risen to the top. 7. George McFly…
With the adoption of Marvel into the Disney Universe, and Pixar still cranking out movies for Disney, it’s inevitable that people started imagining Marvel superheroes as Disney characters. But I think these renditions by Phil Postma are the most impressive. He didn’t just take Pixar characters and dress them in costumes, but actually adopted their style for original renditions. Every now and then, whether it’s for a picture or a document, you need to choose a font. But which one? If you don’t know the difference between Helvetica and Comic Sans, and you like Star Wars, then this helpful infographic is for you. It’s the Galactic Guide to Typography, created by illustrator Vincent Rondia, and it describes fonts according to which popular Star Wars character it resembles. Christian Bale took a lot of heat for an expletive-filled rant he made on the set of Terminator: Salvation, and some other issues with his personal life. But one thing we can say is that he does a lot of charity work. He doesn’t travel around the world with a camera crew in tow like Angelina Jolie. No, he does it quietly and without fanfare. Like when he visited the shooting victims of the theater in Colorado. Or his work with the Redwings Sanctuary to rescue horses. Or how he called up an 8-year-old Zach Guillot (who’s suffering from leukemia)…
I don’t like to do a lot of stories about movies and TV shows in production, just because those tend to look rather silly once the actual product comes out. I mean, remember how excited people were about the photos of the Tumbler on the set of The Dark Knight Rises? Seems kind of goofy now: “OMG, you can totally see the Tumbler we’ve seen before in the last two movies, but it’s on a truck headed for the movie set, which means it’s like we’re seeing it in the new movie, wowwwww!!!” But that’s how eager people were to…
I We’re just going to start posting these honest trailers whenever Screenjunkies uploads them, because they are hilarious. The idea is that these trailers tell the truth about their movies. This time, they tackle Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull. Unlike their trailer for The Dark Knight Rises, this one is kind of a slamdunk. Yet they still managed to bring up some stuff I never thought about. But yes, they do bring up the fridge. [Via YouTube via Laughing Squid via Blastr] What do you think of the trailer?
