Will Wolverine go gangnam style? What do the Sith carry on camping trips? What towed the space shuttle across the 405? Find out in this week’s geek bits… Wolverine, Gangnam Style [via Twitter via Splash Page] No, this is not photoshopped. Korean pop sensation PSY showed up at the set of The Wolverine, and convinced Hugh Jackman to go “gangnam style.” Does this make Hugh Jackman more or less cool? Wired Magazine asked some of the leading writers in scifi, fantasy, and horror to create stories in just six words. The results are awesome, and here are the ten best. 1. Epitaph: Foolish humans, never escaped Earth. – Vernor Vinge 2. It cost too much, staying human. – Bruce Sterling 3. Computer, did we bring batteries? Computer? – Eileen Gunn 4. The baby’s blood type? Human, mostly. – Orson Scott Card 5. Kirby had never eaten toes before. – Kevin Smith 6. Husband, transgenic mistress; wife: “You cow!” – Paul Di Filippo 7. Epitaph: He shouldn’t have fed it. -…
Maybe you’re tired of “Call Me Maybe” parodies, but I’m not. Especially when it involves Robin, er, Officer Blake from The Dark Knight Rises serenading Bruce Wayne into becoming Batman again. And then Commissioner Gordon, Catwoman, and Bane join in. Check out wekejay’s hilarious parody below. What did you think of the video? With the recent Batman vs. Wolverine video, the debate in the YouTube comments revolved around fans who said simply, “No one can kill Wolverine.” Well, that’s not true. At all. In Days of Future Past, a Sentinel incinerated a future version of Wolverine with a single energy blast. In Enemy of the State, Wolverine is killed by Kitty Pryde phasing into his skull and destroying his brain. But since those were alternate realities, let’s assume the “real” Wolverine can’t be killed those ways. That still leaves us eight more ways to kill Wolverine, but there’s some points that need to be…
I tried to give Revolution a chance. I really did. I thought the pilot was a bit dull and the setting wasn’t that original, but I could see potential. The anti-hero status of one of the main characters, Miles Matheson, is interesting. The idea of a world plunged into the Dark Ages is intriguing. Also, I love Giancarlo Esposito. The thing that bothered me the most was the whole “no technology” idea. I’m supposed to believe that all technology just suddenly shut down and won’t come back on. “But,” I thought, “why don’t they just make new batteries and engines?”…
Super Mario Bros is a classic videogame from the 80’s that revolutionized the platform genre. Since then, videogames have changed a lot with different priorities. Game designer Zack Hiwiller asked the question, what would happen if it had been created today? Here’s the result. Having played a lot of Android games lately, I would say it’s more like “what if Mario was remade as a ‘free-to-play’ mobile game.” Click the arrows to cycle through the images: What do you think? What would be the gender-bent Disney version of Doctor Who? Will you get to see Mockingbird Lane? Does Marvel own the Avengers? Who is Anakin Skywalker’s real father? [Via Nerdapproved] Full – click to enlarge Stan Lee Company Claims Disney Doesn’t Own Marvel Superheroes In a potentially groundbreaking lawsuit that could end up costing billions of dollars, Stan Lee Media, Inc. is suing Disney, claiming that it doesn’t own the rights to any of Marvel’s superheroes. One of the most enduring traditions of Doctor Who are his companions. That’s the name fans have given for the Doctor’s ever-present sidekicks. They serve as a counter-balance to the Doctor, as adventurers who can do the action that the Doctor can’t, as a pair of new eyes, as a sounding board for the Doctor to reflect, as an excuse for exposition, as variety from the Doctor’s eccentric ways, and sometimes (for male and female viewers) just plain eye-candy. The companions have varied wildly, including women, men, aliens, and even a robot. There have been companions from the past, present,…
The red shirts of Star Trek have always been a disposable lot, and we didn’t really get to know them on the show before they get incinerated or eaten or turned into crystal. That’s why a new webseries Better Off Red could be a real breakthrough for Star Trek fans. Mike Holmes, Steve Liskiewicz, and Buckly Stephens are three Ohio State University graduates in New York City who are active in the improv and theater community. They’re also fellow geeks who want to create Better Off Red, a comedy series revolving around security officers on a Star Trek-like starship. The potential for…
It’s one thing to read a great review of The Dark Knight Rises. It’s another to read a great review that makes some admittedly good and funny points about the gaping plotholes in this otherwise fine movie. But to have a review of The Dark Knight Rises that also illustrates his points in cartoon form? Epic. That’s why I had to post this cartoon from Graphic Spoiler Alert that is a hilarious take on the movie. FYI, we’ve edited out some of the profanity to make it SFW. Not a big fan of college football, but this video could make me a fan of Ohio State University. On October 6, Ohio State University played against Nebraska. At the half-time show, the Ohio State University Marching Band did an amazing tribute to videogames. The band featured Legend of Zelda, Halo, Pokemon, Tetris, Super Mario Bros, and Pac-Man. Not only did they play the songs, but the band members arranged themselves to form logos and even screenshots of the games. What did you think of the video? If I posted every funny thing I saw just once a day, I’d have enough to fill this blog for the next hundred years. Still, I thought it might be nice to start adding more than one a day, so let’s do a Sunday flood. I wish I could come up with a clever title for this new feature like the Mary Sue’s Things We Saw Today or Maurice’s Geek Bits, but I can’t. If you have a better suggestion, let me know in the comments. 1. Star Wars “No” Supercut [Via Dorkly] I’m not going to say this is…
Summary: Chronicle is a surprisingly unique and realistic take on the concept of superpowers I’d heard a lot about this movie when it hit theaters, but never got to see it. Now I just caught Chronicle on DVD, and have to say I was very impressed. Superpowers have been around for so long that it’s hard to believe someone can find a fresh angle, but this movie did. The plot is deceptively familiar. Three high school kids – a loner with an abusive father, a popular candidate for class president, and a girl-crushing slacker – stumble across a mysterious object…
With The Dark Knight Rises, Christopher Nolan wrapped up his epic vision of Batman. In the book The Art and Making of The Dark Knight Trilogy, Nolan wrote a letter that summed up his feelings about the incredible trilogy. Think of it as his goodbye letter to Batman. It seems like almost everyone above the age of fifteen has played Super Mario Bros., making the theme song an indelible and shared experience. That’s why a lot of people like to mess with it. We’ve all seen hundreds of Imperial stormtroopers killed, but you know the one thing we didn’t see in the Star Wars movies? An injured stormtrooper. Turns out the stormtroopers aren’t too familiar with the concept, either, as seen in this hilarious skit from writer/director Brian Finifter. Director Tim Burton certainly has a unique artistic style; skinny bodies, sunken faces, sharp chins, big eyes, tiny hands and feet, lots of swirly stuff. So how would he handle the superhero team, the Avengers? Canadian artist Xenia “La-Chapeliere-Folle” Rassolova imagines it would look something…like this. With the recent reboot of the DC universe, a lot of people are asking where the industry will go from here. Will this be a genuine new start for the comics or is it just another publicity stunt? This isn’t really new. Publishers are constantly trying new stories and plotlines to attract readers. Sometimes these changes make the character better. Other times, they have no real impact. Other times, it’s a complete disaster that angers fans and alienates casual readers, making the character even less popular than before. That’s why we decided to take a look at some of the…
Little kids, Star Wars, and kittens are all gold on YouTube. So here’s Star Wars: A New Hope, as told by a three-year old. One thing writer-director Joss Whedon brought to the table on Marvel’s The Avengers is his famous skill at writing dialogue. We could go on about the one-liners, moving monologues, and witty banter from this movie, but decided we could show it, instead. Created by Tifferini Graphics, these iconic quotes from each character in the Avengers movie are depicted in a minimalist fashion with an icon representing each speaker. Batman versus Wolverine, a debate that has raged among the geek community for decades. Wolverine (nearly indestructable with razor-sharp claws, healing factor, and unbreakable skeleton) versus Batman (tactical genius with epic martial arts training and unlimited technology), who would win? It’s been debated endlessly, but the webseries Super Power Beatdown decided to bring it to life, and answer the question, once and for all. Check out this awesome video that shows the results. **SPOILER ALERT** If you haven’t seen the video, go no further. If you have, read on for my thoughts on the results… Personally, I disagree. It’s canon…
These days, it seems like everything is on video with people whipping out cellphones and uploading the results to YouTube. If somebody spotted something weird in the sky like, say, the Death Star, we’d probably see it. That’s the premise behind these videos putting Star Wars into our modern world. 6. Some Imperial Star Destroyers spotted in the skies overhead 5. A Millenium Falcon takes off 4. A Star Destroyer arrives in the suburbs 3. An Imperial cruiser appears over a major city 2. What if the Empire invaded San Francisco? 1. The Death Star faces a familiar rival… What…
Earlier this week, we were part of a flood of blogs that posted a video showing an incredibly cool anime-inspired vision of a Star Wars battle. Within hours, the original video was removed from YouTube, so we posted another version someone else uploaded. That was taken down a few hours later, but others have uploaded versions as well that other blogs have been linking to. After researching why the original was taken down in the first place, my brother and I discussed it, and we decided not to link to any other versions and post screencaps instead. I felt our…
It’s been a while since we let you know about the new releases, and I thought this was a good week to bring it back. There are four new Blu-Ray releases that are out that I thought were worth a mention, two of which doubly so. So let’s get right to it. Well, hang on a sec…am I the only one who still hasn’t gotten used to saying “released on Blu-Ray?” It seems like only yesterday that we were saying “released on DVD” like it was a big deal. Technology…slow down, I can’t keep up. Okay, moving on. Indiana Jones:…
What classic science-fiction show inspired Star Wars? What company does Patrick Stewart hate? Who is “Inspector Spacetime?” What if Abraham Lincoln were in Star Wars? Check it out in this week’s “Geek Bits.” Above Image: “Star Wars Stormtrooper BBQ graffiti” via Flickr Time Warner vs Patrick Stewart This week Patrick Stewart took to Twitter to complain about Time Warner taking forever to install his cable. All I wanted to do was set up a new account with @TWCable_NYC but 36hrs later I’ve lost the will to live. The company contacted him to try to make amends, but it was too…
“Gangnam style” has been sweeping the Internet, and parody videos are popping out everywhere. One teen entertainer named Mindy Strater of FunaticsTV went to Star Wars Celebration VI in Orlando, FL, and created her own version of the music video. In it, she gets a bunch of Star Wars characters to dance along, and the results are ridiculously funny. Or just plain ridiculous, depending on how annoying you find the whole “gangnam style” fad. If you haven’t heard of gangnam style, here’s a brief rundown from Know Your Meme: Gangnam Style is a 2012 dance pop single written and performed…
EDIT: Fixed some typos. The new NBC series Revolution premeired last night, and I went into the series with high hopes to see a unique post-apocalyptic TV show. The premise is that all the world’s power suddenly fails. Power plants, engines, and even batteries stop working, and won’t come back on, leaving humanity in a new Dark Age. Unfortunately, I found myself disappointed with the derivative and outlandish story the show seems to be setting up. The opening scene of the premeire was awesome in depicting the Blackout with cars grinding to a halt on the freeway, and planes tumbling…
This week in our “geeks love” series, we’re featuring the Batgirl and iconic green alien herself, Yvonne Craig. Bio: Born on May 16 1937 in Illinois, Yvonne Craig started out as a classically trained ballet dancer. After performing for a number of years in the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, Craig moved into acting with a number of movie and TV roles. She starred with Elvis Presley in Kissin’ Cousins, but her most memorable TV role came on Batman in 1968. She stole geek hearts as Barbara Gordon, Commissioner Gordon’s daughter, and her secret identity Batgirl. Craig was almost as…
Now if you’re like me, friends, you don’t just want to watch Star Trek. You want to captain your own starship, am I right? But you can’t captain your own starship. No, that’s crazy talk! No, it’s not just a space simulator game – it’s a space bridge simulator game. You run the game on six different computers, and each computer runs a station on a single virtual starship. You…
