The Super Bowl may not scream geek, but there’s something even sportsphobes can enjoy, which are the commercials. There weren’t many geek friendly ads this year, but a few stood out. Here’s nine for us geeks. 1. Doritos Time Machine – Doritos created a clever ad involving a little kid, a gullible adult, and time travel. 2. Buckle Up: Cosmos – The Internet’s beloved astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson is going to be hosting a revival of the classic TV series, Cosmos. The Super Bowl gave us a sample. 3. Transformers: Age of Extinction – The fourth installment of the impossibly…

One of my favorite characters in the Star Wars universe is Jabba the Hutt from Return of the Jedi. Powerful, disgusting, sadistic, and terrifying, Jabba has become symbolic of greed and obesity in our culture. I always thought his sluglike appearance perfectly captured his personality, which is why I was surprised to find out he didn’t always look that way. Here’s a peek at how Jabba was portrayed before his final appearance in ROTJ. Jabba the Hutt was originally meant to appear in a scene in A New Hope. They had actor Declan Mulholland playing the role of Jabba on…

I’m a big fan of MST3K, so when I found a video archive of old movies, I thought they were begging for the funny commentary. [Warning: Minor spoiler for Thor: The Dark World] One of the moments that got the biggest laughs in my theater during Thor: The Dark World was the moment where Loki takes on the appearance of Thor’s friends, culminating with his transformation into Captain America. The surprise cameo by Chris Evans was hilarious, but it turns out it wasn’t the original version. In the original take, Tom Hiddleston played all the characters, including Captain America. But the twist is Hiddleston played the role as Loki doing an impression of Captain America. It’s kind of mind-twisting to read about, but brilliant to…

One of the most infamous scenes in The Dark Knight is a scene that’s come to be known as the Pencil Trick. Shocking, disturbing, simple, and twisted, it perfectly captured the malevolent and brutal humor of Heath Ledger’s new interpretation of the Joker. Yet there was a lot going on with that one moment. Here are seven interesting facts about the scene. First of all, let’s watch it, courtesy of GIFSoup: 1. Here are five characters fans have fallen in love with. 5. P1ZZ4 Guy (Spiderman 2) Donnell Rawlings, Spider-Man 2 In Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker was hurrying to deliver pizzas to keep his job. Blogger Jon Negroni has created what he calls the Pixar Theory, an idea on how every Pixar movie is connected in a massive timeline spanning thousands of years that runs from Brave to Monsters, Inc. Basically, his idea boils down to how the Pixar movies chronicle a gradual evolution of machines and animals to replace mankind in the distant future. His theory is illustrated in this infographic. Captain America (Chris Evans) swinging after HYDRA; Captain America: The First Avenger With the upcoming Captain America: The Winter Soldier, I’m reminded of something that puzzled me in the first movie. I loved First Avenger, but I wondered why Cap fought HYDRA soldiers instead of Nazis. Captain America has always been tied deeply with the Nazis. His first issue’s cover featured Captain America punching out Adolf Hitler. His greatest enemy is the Red Skull, a former Nazi. As for HYDRA, in the comics, it didn’t exist in World War II. So why the switch? It turns out the answer is…
