Watch Vin Diesel Say “I Am Groot” in Mandarin Chinese

Guardians of Galaxy (2014) – Groot (Vin Diesel)

Watch Vin Diesel’s brilliant delivery of three lines in five languages. Marvel movies are international and the Guardians of Galaxy movie is being released on over 80 countries. For the international releases of Guardians of Galaxy, Vin Diesel recorded his lines in multiple languages like Spanish, Russian and Mandarin Chinese. Watching this video, it’s amazing to see how much effort and care he put into the performance. You’d think he’d just say, “Yo soy Groot” and move onto the next line, but the African-American actor uses his rich, deep baratone to put as much feeling as he can. It’s also great to watch him change his face and body for the lines.

A lot of actors would have just dialed it, but not Diesel. “The ways in which Vin Diesel says ‘I am Groot,’ I am astounded,” director James Gunn says. “All of the ‘I am Groots’ that were earlier voices didn’t sound very good at all, they sounded like s**t. It just didn’t really work. Then Vin came in and in one day, laid down all these ‘I am Groot’ tracks, and he’s a perfectionist. He made me explain to him with [every] ‘I am Groot,’ exactly what he was saying…..Then Vin would sit there and he would do it and he would it again and again and again, and his voice is so rich and so beautiful and he really opened up and was this character. It was amazing when we first put that voice in there how much the character changed and how much he influenced the character.”

Groot (also known as the Monarch of Planet X) is a sentient plant-like being that first appeared in Tales to Astonish #13 (1960). Originally he was a villain that was capturing humans for study, but he eventually became a hero and a partner of Rocket Raccoon. While he only says “I am Groot” his inflections and mannerisms can change the meaning to a broad number of things.

See how much effort Diesel put into his “I am Groot” in Spanish by watching the behind-the-scenes video below:

By comparison Michael Clarke Duncan played Groot on Ultimate Spider-Man and did a good job. But, it’s nothing like Vin Diesel’s performance. You can watch it below:
