Surviving a fall from space should be the hard part. The Above the Below trailer says otherwise. Idris Elba plays a commander whose capsule survives re-entry, then promptly sinks like a very expensive rock. Now his crew is trapped on the ocean floor, and the air is running out. Elba also co-directs this Lionsgate thriller, so if it bombs, he can only blame himself. The first Above the Below trailer looks like Gravity got lost and ended up underwater. Here is everything we know about Above the Below, from the poster to the December release date.

What Is Above the Below?
So, what is Above the Below, exactly? In short, it’s a survival thriller with a cruel sense of humor. Three astronauts survive a disaster in space. Then their unscheduled crash-landing drops them straight into the ocean. Unfortunately, the ocean doesn’t care about their heroic re-entry. Their capsule sinks into the crushing depths, and the crew loses all contact with mission control. Meanwhile, their oxygen supply starts dropping fast.
Above the Below comes from Lionsgate and Future Artists Entertainment, a British production company. Co-director Martin Owen created the original story. Then Elizabeth Morris, Matthew Mitchell, and Vicki Sargent wrote the screenplay. Lionsgate first announced Above the Below at the American Film Market in 2023. In other words, this movie has been holding its breath for about three years.
The premise sounds simple, and that’s the point. Above the Below doesn’t need aliens, asteroids, or killer robots. Instead, the threat is water, pressure, and a ticking air supply. Honestly, that might be scarier than any monster. Every breath becomes a countdown, and every choice could cost someone their life. The official synopsis even teases impossible choices about who risks everything to reach the surface. So yes, Above the Below plans to make you sweat in a very cold theater.
The official synopsis reads:
“When three astronauts survive a catastrophic fall from space, they become trapped in the crushing depths of the ocean with oxygen rapidly running out. Facing a race against time where every breath could be their last, they must make impossible choices about who will risk everything to reach the surface and who may be left behind. Idris Elba co-directs and stars in this survival-thriller alongside Caitlin Fitzgerald and Hero Fiennes Tiffin.”
Above the Below Trailer Breakdown
The first Above the Below trailer dropped on October 20, and it wastes zero time. It opens with tense dialogue between crew commander Jackson and pilot Brooks. You can feel the friction before anything even goes wrong. Then, naturally, everything goes wrong.
During re-entry, the capsule veers off its planned path. Next, it slams into the sea and starts sinking. From there, the Above the Below trailer shifts into full claustrophobia mode. We get cramped interior shots and three astronauts running out of options fast. It reminds me of the classic near-drowning scene in The Abyss. There’s no rescue team in sight, and nobody on the radio.
Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s first images pile on the dread. One shot shows Elba’s face barely clearing the waterline under a slate-grey sky. His orange suit is the only warm color left in the frame. That’s a bleak mood board, and we’re totally here for it.
Finally, the Above the Below trailer ends with Jackson asking a brutal question. Basically, how hard would you fight to stay alive? It’s a simple hook, but it lands. Here’s the funny part, though. This is a space movie where outer space is the easy part. Above the Below makes the ocean the real final frontier, and the trailer sells that twist perfectly.
Above the Below Cast and Characters

The Above the Below cast is small, and that works in the movie’s favor. With only three astronauts, every face matters. Plus, there’s nowhere to hide inside a sinking capsule.
First up, Idris Elba plays Jackson, the crew commander. Elba already has serious geek cred. He played Heimdall in Thor and the sequels and Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad. He even voices Knuckles in the Sonic franchise. Now, he plays a commander who can’t punch his way out of drowning.
Next, Caitlin FitzGerald plays Brooks, the pilot. You might know her from Masters of Sex, or We Were Liars. In the trailer, Brooks and Jackson clearly butt heads. That friction should fuel plenty of drama once the air starts running out.
Rounding out the crew, Hero Fiennes Tiffin plays Rhodes. Fiennes Tiffin broke out in the After franchise and recently joined Young Sherlock. As the youngest actor of the trio, he could bring the rawest panic to the capsule.
Overall, the Above the Below cast keeps things tight and personal. There’s no giant ensemble to dilute the stakes. Instead, three people, one capsule, and a shrinking air supply drive Above the Below. That’s a recipe for a lean, mean thriller.
Idris Elba Behind the Camera
Idris Elba doesn’t just star in Above the Below. He also co-directs it with Martin Owen. This marks Elba’s second feature as a director, following his 2018 crime drama Yardie. Meanwhile, Owen previously directed The Loneliest Boy in the World. Together, they bring drama chops and genre weirdness to the table.
More importantly, Above the Below leans hard on practical filmmaking. The production built a full-size spacecraft and actually submerged it. The cast also trained to hold their breath for minutes at a time. Elba even joked about showing off a four-minute breath hold. Honestly, that’s more commitment than most of us give our New Year’s resolutions.
The shoot ran from November 2023 to February 2024 at Pinewood Studios near London. Specifically, the crew used the studio’s underwater stage. That matters because water is notoriously hard to fake. CGI water often looks weightless and clean. Real water, on the other hand, looks cold, heavy, and dangerous.
Ultimately, practical effects could make Above the Below feel genuinely suffocating. When actors really struggle underwater, audiences feel it in their chests. Gravity proved how immersive a survival thriller can be. Above the Below might pull off the same trick, just with a lot more water up your nose.
Above the Below Release Date, Rating, and Runtime

Mark your calendar, because Above the Below opens in theaters on December 4, 2026. Lionsgate is releasing it exclusively in U.S. theaters, so don’t expect a surprise streaming drop. Meanwhile, LEONINE Studios is handling a German-dubbed version overseas.
The Above the Below poster and trailer both dropped on October 20, 2026. That gives Lionsgate about six weeks to build buzz. It’s a tight window, but survival thrillers usually sell themselves with a good hook. And “astronauts drowning” is a pretty great hook.
As for the rating, Above the Below is rated R for language. Apparently, sinking to the ocean floor brings out the colorful vocabulary. Fair enough. We’d probably swear too. Notably, the rating doesn’t mention violence or gore. So, expect tension and terror rather than buckets of blood.
Runtime is a lean 87 minutes. Honestly, that’s the perfect length for this kind of movie. Above the Below doesn’t need three hours of backstory. It needs a ticking clock, and 87 minutes keeps the pressure on.
Finally, streaming and digital release dates haven’t been announced yet. We’ll update this post once Lionsgate shares its plans for Above the Below.
Above the Below vs. Above & Below

Here’s where things get confusing. 2026 gave us two underwater movies with nearly identical titles. One is Above the Below. The other is Above & Below. Yes, really. Hollywood apparently ran out of prepositions.
Above the Below is the Idris Elba movie. It follows three astronauts trapped in a sinking space capsule. It hits theaters on December 4, 2026, through Lionsgate.
Meanwhile, Above & Below is a completely different film. Jesse V. Johnson directed it, and Antonio Banderas plays a ruthless cartel leader. In that movie, vacationing friends get trapped in a shark cage while criminals take over their boat. Above & Below opened in theaters on July 29, 2026. Then it arrived on digital rental on August 25.
So, how do you keep them straight? Add the star’s name to your search. Search “Idris Elba Above the Below” for astronauts. Search “Banderas Above & Below” for sharks and cartel drama. Both movies share a theme of running out of air underwater. However, only Above the Below involves falling from space first. That’s a pretty big difference, even if the titles look ready to fight over it.
Movies Like Above the Below

If the Above the Below trailer has you craving more survival thrillers, you’re in luck. These movies scratch the same claustrophobic itch while you wait for December.
- Gravity (2013) – Sandra Bullock and George Clooney fight to survive after debris shreds their shuttle. It’s the obvious comparison, and Above the Below feels like its soggy cousin.
- Apollo 13 (1995) – Ron Howard turns oxygen math into edge-of-your-seat drama. Tom Hanks and crew prove engineering can be thrilling.
- The Abyss (1989) – James Cameron’s deep-sea classic nails underwater dread. It’s still the gold standard for real water stunts.
- Underwater (2020) – Kristen Stewart leads a crew across a collapsing ocean-floor station. Expect crushing depth and pure claustrophobia.
- 47 Meters Down (2017) – Two sisters get stuck in a shark cage with dwindling air. Ironically, it has more in common with Above & Below.

Final Thoughts
The Above the Below trailer sells a simple, nasty premise. Survive space, then drown anyway. Idris Elba pulls double duty as star and co-director, and the practical approach could make every breath feel real. Plus, a tight cast and an 87-minute runtime suggest zero wasted time. Sure, the title will keep getting confused with a Banderas shark movie. Still, Above the Below looks like the tighter, scarier ride. We’ll know for sure when Above the Below surfaces in theaters on December 4.
