William Shatner isn’t known for holding his tongue, so it’s no surprise when he said J.J. Abrams is a “pig.” But is he right?

Last month came the news that Star Trek director J.J. Abrams is directing the next Star Wars. William Shatner, who played Captain James Kirk in the original Star Trek series gave his opinion on it. Shatner has a weird sense of humor, so he might have been kidding in an interview with Movie Fanatic. On the other hand, he’s been feuding with George Takei for years, saying he has a “psychosis.” He also started a YouTube fued “Yo Mamma” fight with Carrie Fisher. So anything is possible. Let’s assume that he’s serious.
Watch the video of Shatner calling J.J. Abrams a pig.
He was asked if it’s good that J.J. Abrams’ is directing Star Wars and Star Trek. Here’s what he said:
“No.” Shatner said, “He’s being a pig. I mean, he’s collecting the two franchises and holding them close to his vest. He’s probably the most talented director of that ilk we have. But, he’s gone too far this time.
“I think of him as a buddy of mine. I’ve taken him out for sushi. I think it’s time for J.J. and I to have a little sushi and let me put him straight about two of the largest franchises and not employing me in either one of them I think is just foolhardy.”
Many have complained about Abrams talking control of the two biggest franchises of geekdom. Are they right? Is Abrams being a greedy pig for directing both franchises? Vote using the poll below or in the comments.

What do you think? Is Abrams a greedy pig? Is William Shatner joking? What do you think of Shatner after hearing this clip?

Looks like they need to hash out some things over sushi!
I think Bill is largely being facetious, but he is right. Making a movie takes a hell of a lot of work, especially big budget spectaculars like Star Wars and Star Trek. Trying to run both at the same time is impossible if you want to give 100% to both.
big fight… i think he was just mad… cause he wasn't in the new star trek… that i believe grossed more fat cash then any of the ones prior to it… fact checker?
Shat is clearly still upset that Nimoy got in the new Star Trek and he hasn't. That's the only thing this is about. He's continually petrified that he'll become irrelevant, but no Star Trek actor has had as much work as he has over the years. He needs to get over this.
I say it depends on if Star Wars is good or not. If it is shot like Star Trek, then I'd say yes.
I don't know what to think, but I still love Bill and the new Star Trek.
Sushi solves everything Alex.
I think he genuinely believes he can do it, but it's a lot of work for one man, Pat.
Good point Jeremy. For reference, Star Trek made over $250 million which is way more than the others unless you count inflation. Then it's about equal with Star Trek: the Motion Picture.
Leave it to William Shatner to spit on anything related to Star Wars… I think he should let his jealousy or hate of that franchise go: it doesn't threaten Star Trek. It's possible to love them both. I do hope Abrams creates a distinctive feel for the Star Wars movies, it would be sad if they felt the same as his ST movies, but I think he'll do a good job. Surelly, he knows the pressure is on and I'm sure he respects Star Wars.
