Geek Bits: J.J. Abrams Directing Star Wars VII, MIckey Mouse in Empire Strikes Back and More [Links]

Welcome to “Geek Bits,” where we share the geekiest bits of the Internet for you.  Who is the Star Trek Into Darkness villain? What would R2-D2 look like as a tea cup? Where is Mickey Mouse hidden in Star Wars? When will we see another solo Batman movie? How many doctors has Star Trek had? Is the Joker reformed in Dark Knight Returns Part 2?

    STAR TREK

There’s been a lot of speculation who the Star Trek Into Darkness villain (Benedict Cumberbatch) will be playing, but a prequel comic pretty much blows all the theories away. I don’t think the name is a spoiler, but, if you do, then skip to the next story. The villain’s name is: Robert April. Who?

Disney Easter Egg in Star Wars: The Empire Strike Back. Do you see Mickey?

The Wrap said, “J.J. Abrams will direct the next Star Wars film for Disney, taking stewardship of one of Hollywood’s most iconic and lucrative film franchises, an individual with knowledge of the production told TheWrap.” That’s all we have, but it’s being treated as a confirmed rumor.

    BLADE RUNNER

Sean Young may return for the Ridley Scott Blade-Runner sequel. “Well, I did meet with Alcon, the company that owns it and is planning to do the remake with Ridley.” Young said, “I did meet with them, but I think at that point they just wanted to meet me and I don’t think they have any plans of using any of the original people, although I can’t say for sure. I do think, let me just say it right here, I do think it would be a disappointment to the audience not to have Rachel in it but you know what, folks in Hollywood make mistakes all the time.

“I guess depending on your interpretation of the film, she might have only lasted four years.

Oh no, in the interpretation I’m the one that has no end date. I’m the one that rides off in the car with him at the end that has no end date. I’m Nexus-7, not Nexus-6.” (Via Crave Online)

That's good they might finally get a Robotech movie out there. What the hell's taken them so long? Hollywood really makes me shake my head sometimes.

    2. Maurice Mitchell on January 25, 2013 3:17 pm

As for the JJ Abrams thing, it's the Hollywood choice: bland and safe. The question is what kind of movie he can put together in two years. I mean this is Star Wars for crying out loud, not Paranormal Activity; you can't just slap something together in three months.

    3. Maurice Mitchell on January 25, 2013 4:51 pm

Robert April, for those who have no clue, was the original captain of the Enterprise, the first one Roddenberry conceived when he pitched the show, before Pike in the first pilot and Kirk in the second. He was featured in the animated series episode "The Counter-Clock Incident."

I completely trust Abrams as director of the next Star Wars. How many people have said that his Star Trek is already Star Wars?

    4. Maurice Mitchell on January 25, 2013 6:11 pm

I actually like JJ Abrams for Star Wars, and I'm not a huge fan of him by any means. He makes glossy, empty films, but he makes them fun. The last Star Trek film had weak writing, but he kept it moving, so that if you don't pay attention, it's a blast. Besides, he's more comfortable in a fantasy setting rather than a SF one.

    5. Maurice Mitchell on January 25, 2013 6:11 pm

I can't wait for the new Star Trek and look forward to seeing what Abrams does for Star Wars. No more cutsies, please!

A lot of long-delayed sequels are lame, but this sounds like one of the rare exceptions Jeremy. You and Rachel will enjoy it!

It is an incredibly short time frame Pat, but I'm hoping we can count the decades that Lucas has been thinking about it.

    11. Maurice Mitchell on January 26, 2013 1:07 am

It has been a long, long time Pat. "Robotech…to the rescue!"

Scott is an amazing film-maker Alex, so I know it'll be great.
