Howard the Duck (Ed Gale), Beverly (Lea Thompson), Source: Howard the Duck; Credit: Lucasfilm Howard the Duck is an underappreciated property that would make a fantastic reboot movie. I know, the words Howard the Duck are synonymous with disaster and failure, but it wasn’t always so. I actually was a big fan of this movie as a kid. It’s only once you get older that you realize how awful it really was. But if anything, that makes me want a reboot even more. There was an announcement in 2012 about a remake, but that was an April Fools’ joke. Well, this…

Source: WarGames In 1983, a low-budget movie widely considered a simple teenage sci-fi thriller hit the screens. That movie was WarGames, about a teenager who accidentally hacks into NORAD and almost triggers World War III. The movie was a smash hit, and also had far-reaching effects on Hollywood and the world. Over twenty-five years later, it’s still considered the benchmark of computer-related movies, and its message of the dangers of technology and advanced warfare are even more relevant. Here’s a small sample of five ways this little movie had a big impact. 1. The Hacking Community – The initial impact…

Godzilla (1998) By all accounts, the new Godzilla is a huge success, which only serves to underscore how crappy the first American version from 1998 was. You know how some movies seem bad, but then you watch them later and realize they weren’t that bad? Yeah, this isn’t one of them. Godzilla 1998 is in the small category of bad movies along with Batman and Robin that only get worse over time. I remember all the hype surrounding when it was released, but I wish this new honest trailer from ScreenJunkies had aired instead. Would’ve saved me the cost of a…

One thing I love about the modern Internet is the recent popularity of image memes, where someone takes a picture and gives it a funny caption, and other people add their own variations on that funny caption. My current favorite is called “Grandma Finds the Internet,” jokes about an elderly and clueless grandmother’s interactions with the Web. Okay, it’s an unfair stereotype that old people can’t use the Internet, but it’s still funny. And having worked in tech support, I can tell you ignorance can be found at any age. Here are my ten favorites. What do you think of Grandma…

Ant-Man Helmet, Source: Marvel What did Edgar Wright have planned for Ant-Man? He’s been attached as a director and screenwriter for the movie since he began developing it in 2003, but suddenly announced he was leaving the movie last week. Details are sketchy, but what no one is denying is that Wright left Ant-Man because of “creative differences.” That means the script. Reportedly, Marvel demanded multiple rewrites, including a final rewrite by other writers without consulting Wright. I thought it would be interesting to look at what Wright had planned for the movie, and why he clashed with Marvel over it. Marvel…

The cyberpunk anime film Akira is, without a doubt, a landmark in Japanese animation. Not only did it break new ground in the genre, but it introduced the Western world to foreign animation like never before. Fans have long-awaited a live-action adaptation, and excitement grew when Warner Bros announced their production. Fans were ultimately disappointed when it never came to pass. That’s why an independent group called The Akira Project gained so much excitement. With the help of an Indiegogo campaign, a small team of fans produced their own take on what a live-action Akira trailer would look like. And…

Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) looking in mirror, Source: Spider-Man (2002), Credit: Sony Pictures It’s actually surprisingly hard to film mirrors in movies. The biggest problem is trying to avoid showing the camera and crew in the reflection. But some movies have made shooting mirror scenes even more complicated. Summary: Six characters from Spider-Man’s history would make better movies than Venom and the Sinister Six. Right now, every movie studio’s goal is to create a shared universe like Marvel has with the Avengers. Sony has announced plans to create their own cinematic universe with their property, Spider-Man. So far, they’ve announced The Sinister Six and Venom are in development. Personally, I don’t think making standalone movies out of the villains is the right way to go. There are plenty of characters associated with Spider-Man who would make better movies. Here are six suggestions. 6. Black Cat (Felicia Hardy) One of…

Source: Lucasfilm I have to say, I was never comfortable with Star Wars: The Clone Wars. While it was nice to have a weekly series and new adventures, it didn’t feel like Star Wars to me. The clone troopers who were supposed to be heroes (but you knew would become stormtroopers), the weird proto-starships that looked like twisted versions of familiar ships from the original movies, the Jedi fighting “Separatists” instead of the Empire, and Anakin as the hero just never felt right. Plus, it never felt like canon, since Lucasfilm tended to pick and choose which elements of the…
