8 Movies to Watch Before “Ant-Man and the Wasp”

Here’s a list of movies you should watch to prepare for “Ant-Man and the Wasp“.

The latest Marvel movie Ant-Man and the Wasp had it’s world premiere a few days ago and hits the United States in a few weeks on July 6, 2018. It’s already getting rave reviews and has a Rotten Tomato score of 89% as of today.

So what should you watch if you haven’t seen that many MCU movies or aren’t familiar with the actors? Here’s a handy guide to the movies you should watch before heading out to watch “Ant-Man 2”.

You can find them on Amazon by searching their site but you should check out a new service I found out about called Chili.

Chili’s based in the UK but offers lower prices on some movies and has an option to rent movies in HD+ which Amazon doesn’t. It’s not available in the U.S. right now but this should be useful for our friends in the UK and Europe.

    Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

The new movie is breaking box office records but the second Avengers movie sets up everything that comes after it including the introduction of Vision and expanding Tony Stark’s story arc that continues into Winter Soldier. Watch this movie to get caught up on what happens later on.

    Ant-Man (2015)

With the new movie opening soon it’s a great time to catch up. Especially because “Ant-Man 2” picks up two years after the events of “Captain America: Civil War”. It helps you understand his motivation and desire to be a good father to his daughter Cassie.

    Captain America: Civil War (2016)

While Ant-Man is Paul Rudd’s first appearance as the superhero its this movie that shows his place in the Marvel universe. This takes place one year after “Age of Ultron”, so it sets an important milestone in the films. Plus its the first time we see Scott Lang turn into Giant Man.

    The Matrix (1999)

In “Ant-Man 2” Laurence Fishburne plays Bill Foster. He’s being set up to play the superhero, Goliath. Marvel superheroes do a lot of fighting and “The Matrix” shows Fishburne in his fighting prime. At 55 he might not have the same fight in him but he’s still got the moves.

    Akeelah and the Bee (2006)

We don’t know if Bill Foster will turn into Goliath in the movie but we do know he’s an academic and a scientist. Watch this movie to see Fishburne play an English professor with a quiet dignity.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)

Evangeline Lilly plays Hope van Dyne aka The Wasp. Lilly has never played a superhero before but if you’d like to get a preview of her in action watch this movie. She plays the fighting elf Tauriel.

    Tomb Raider (2018)

Hannah John-Kamen plays Ghost. While the Nigerian actress has only done a handful of feature films but you can still get a taste of her acting chops. She played Dutch / Aneela in the SyFy series “KillJoys” and as Simone in “Tomb Raider” (2018). Watch both to watch up on her acting and action movie skills.

    Avengers Infinity War (2018)

“Ant-Man and the Wasp” is set between “Civil War” and “Infinity War”. But that doesn’t mean it’s independent. In fact, the Russo brothers said the Hawkeye and Ant-Man needed to be under house arrest for a reason. They talked to the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast and broke it down.

Anthony Russo: There is a very specific story choice why…

Joe Russo: There is a… we have a really interesting story cooked up for both of those characters, and part of that story required that they be under house arrest.

So watch Infinity War to make sure you understand what’s happening.

It’s still in theaters so check it out

About Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)

Official synopsis: “From the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes a new chapter featuring heroes with the astonishing ability to shrink: “Ant-Man and The Wasp.” In the aftermath of “Captain America: Civil War,” Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) grapples with the consequences of his choices as both a Super Hero and a father. As he struggles to rebalance his home life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he’s confronted by Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) and Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) with an urgent new mission. Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside The Wasp as the team works together to uncover secrets from their past.”
