Need for Speed (2014) Kid Cudi, Aaron Paul

Find out about the upcoming film based on the video game series Need for Speed.

We don’t usually cover video games, but we have covered video game based movies in the past like Tomb Raider, so I think this is relevant. I do love this game series.

    Breaking Bad star Aaron
Paul is starring in a DreamWorks Pictures’ film along with hip-hop star Kid Cudi. The film casts Michael Keaton as a reclusive and eccentric host of an
    underground supercar race.

Need for Speed is hoping to capture some of the success of the Fast and the Furious franchise which has grossed almost one billion dollars over six movies.

    Here’s the official press release:

    Dominic Cooper (left) and Dakota
Johnson co-star in DreamWorks Pictures’ “Need for Speed,” based on the
most successful racing video game franchise ever. In an exciting return
to the great car culture films of the 1960s and ’70s that tap into what
makes the American myth of the open road so enticing, “Need for Speed”
chronicles a near-impossible cross-country race against time – one that
begins as a mission for revenge, but proves to be one of redemption.
Need for speed opens March 14, 2014 nationwide.

Based on the most successful racing video game franchise ever with over
140 million copies sold, DreamWorks Pictures’ “Need for Speed” captures
the thrills of the game in a real-world setting. An exciting return to
the great car-culture films of the 1960s and ’70s, when authenticity
brought a new level of intensity to the action, “Need for Speed” taps
into what makes the American myth of the open road so enticing.

The story chronicles a near-impossible cross-country race against
time – one that begins as a mission for revenge, but proves to be one of
redemption. In a last attempt to save his struggling garage,
blue-collar mechanic Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul) – who with his team
skillfully builds and races muscle cars on the side – reluctantly
partners with wealthy, arrogant ex-NASCAR driver Dino Brewster (Dominic
Cooper). Just as a major sale to car broker Julia Bonet (Imogen Poots)
looks like it will save the business, a disastrous, unsanctioned race
results in Dino framing Tobey for manslaughter.

Two years later and fresh out of prison, Tobey is set on revenge with
plans to take down Dino in the high-stakes De Leon race – the Super Bowl
of underground racing. To get there in time, Tobey must run a
    high-octane, action-packed gauntlet, dodging cops coast-to-coast and
dealing with fallout from a dangerous bounty Dino put on his car. With
his loyal crew and the surprisingly resourceful Julia as allies, Tobey
defies odds at every turn and proves that even in the flashy world of
exotic supercars, the underdog can still finish first.

“Need for Speed” is presented by DreamWorks Pictures, produced by John
Gatins, Pat O’Brien and Mark Sourian and directed by Scott Waugh. The
screen story is by John Gatins and George Gatins and the screenplay is
by George Gatins and John Gatins, based on the video game series
created by Electronic Arts.  The film releases in U.S. theaters on
    March 14, 2014.

The games are awesome – not too sure about a movie. Hey, if they made Battleship work, why not?

    2. Pat Dilloway on September 18, 2013 12:00 am

I never watched a Fast & Furious movie so I really don't need to watch this. Between this and Robocop it's nice to see Michael Keaton getting back in movies again.

    3. DAVID WALSTON on September 18, 2013 5:44 am

Not my cup of tea. I did like the first Mortal Kombat movie. I also loved the Soundtrack.

    4. John Garrett on September 23, 2013 1:44 am

Man this looks like it's going to be fun! I love the Need for Speed games, so I hope this is successful – I'm looking forward to it.

On another note, I believe it's "Kid" Cudi, not "King"…

    5. Maurice Mitchell on September 25, 2013 12:18 am

Good catch John! I hope so too, since good racing movies are hard to find.
