A staggering number of new Star Wars books are coming, and we mean “staggering.” The franchise turns 50 in 2027, and Lucasfilm clearly isn’t treating it like just another birthday. We already knew about a new movie, a A New Hope re-release, and Ahsoka Season 2. Then New York Comic Con 2026 happened. The Lucasfilm Publishing panel revealed more than 20 Star Wars books for 2027 in one sitting. The list included novels, comics, art books, manga, kids’ books, and even a D&D game. Your bookshelf should probably start stretching now. Most sites picked five highlights and called it a day. We counted every single one instead. Below is every Star Wars book 2027 reveal, plus release dates, authors, and what’s actually worth preordering.

Star Wars: Ahsoka — Escape From Thrawn
Let’s start with the reveal that made everyone in the room sit up. Marvel’s Star Wars: Ahsoka — Escape From Thrawn is a five-issue miniseries based on a story by Dave Filoni himself. Yes, the guy who created Ahsoka and now runs creative at Lucasfilm. He co-writes with Rodney Barnes, while Andrea Di Vito handles interior art. Phil Noto provides the cover, because of course he does.
The story fills a gap Season 1 left wide open. Ezra Bridger escapes exile on Peridea by stowing away aboard Grand Admiral Thrawn’s flagship, the Chimaera. Naturally, that’s not a great place to hide. Ezra spends the series dodging Captain Enoch, the Nightsisters’ dark magick, and the Empire’s smartest tactician.
Timing is everything here. Issue #1 hits comic shops on January 20, 2027, the same day Ahsoka Season 2 premieres. That makes this the most canon-critical Star Wars book of 2027. If you only add one comic to your pull list, make it this one. Skipping it might mean missing context the show assumes you already have.
Star Wars: Princess of the Rebellion
Claudia Gray has quietly become the best Leia writer in the business. She gave us Bloodline and Leia: Princess of Alderaan, and both still hold up. Now she’s back with Star Wars: Princess of the Rebellion, a YA novel from Delacorte Press. Fittingly, it arrives on Star Wars Day, May 4, 2027.
The setting is a sweet spot fans rarely get to explore. The book takes place between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. Princess Leia recruits her new friends, Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, for a very personal mission. Together, they work to uncover secrets her adoptive father, Bail Organa, left behind.
That premise does a lot of heavy lifting. Leia just lost Alderaan, and now she’s digging through her father’s legacy. Meanwhile, the Luke-Han-Leia dynamic is still brand new and slightly awkward. Gray is great at that kind of emotional tension, so expectations are understandably high.
Among the novels on the Star Wars books 2027 slate, this one feels like the safest bet. Don’t let the YA label scare you off, either. Gray’s YA work reads just as well for adult fans.

From the Ashes (Reign of the Empire)
Plenty of coverage skipped this one, which is a shame. From the Ashes is a new adult novel by Fran Wilde, published by Random House Worlds. It continues the Reign of the Empire series that Alexander Freed kicked off with The Mask of Fear.
That series focuses on the dark early years of Palpatine’s rule. It explores how ordinary people, senators, and future rebels react as the Republic collapses into the Empire. In other words, it’s the political, slow-burn side of Star Wars. Think more Andor than Saturday-morning lightsaber duels.
Wilde is a newer voice in the galaxy, and that’s actually exciting. Fresh authors tend to bring fresh angles, especially in an era fans think they already know. Plot details are still under wraps, so expect more news closer to release.
Still, if you like your Star Wars grounded, morally gray, and heavy on consequences, keep this one on your radar. It’s the sleeper pick of the Star Wars books in 2027. Many readers will discover it late, and then wonder why nobody told them sooner.

Star Wars 50th Anniversary Books
A 50th anniversary needs a few big, heavy books that look great on a coffee table. Lucasfilm delivered three.
First up is Star Wars: A Celebration from DK. Pablo Hidalgo writes it, with interviews by Anthony Breznican. The book chronicles the franchise’s first 50 years, with contributions from Dr. Chris Kempshall, Kristin Baver, and Jordan Hembrough. It arrives April 6, 2027. There’s also a Target exclusive edition with extra content, so choose your retailer wisely.
Next, Kristin Baver’s Star Wars: Celebrating 50 Years of A New Hope comes from Abrams. This one tracks how the original film shaped real people and entire industries. Baver gathered stories from actors, astronauts, athletes, and innovators. Basically, it’s proof that A New Hope changed more than movies.
Finally, Abrams is reissuing Star Wars Storyboards: The Original Trilogy in a 50th anniversary edition. It collects storyboards from A New Hope, Empire, and Return of the Jedi. For film nerds, this is the good stuff.
Together, these anchor the Star Wars 50th anniversary books lineup. They also make excellent gifts for the fan who already owns everything.
The Shooting Script and Visual Archive
Here’s one for the true archive diggers. Insight Editions is publishing Star Wars: A New Hope: The Shooting Script as a collector’s edition. That’s George Lucas’s actual shooting script for the film that started everything.
Why should you care? Scripts reveal what almost happened. Fans have long known about cut material, like the Anchorhead scenes with Luke and Biggs. Reading the shooting script puts those moments back in context. It also shows how much the movie changed between the page and the final edit.
Insight Editions isn’t stopping there. Clayton Sandell’s Star Wars: A New Hope Visual Archive adds a new entry to the publisher’s Visual Archive series. Expect production photos, behind-the-scenes material, and plenty of deep-cut imagery.
Put these next to the Storyboards edition, and you’ve got a serious A New Hope reference shelf. Among all the Star Wars books in 2027, these are the most collector-focused. They’re less about new stories and more about honoring the original. For longtime fans, honestly, that might be the bigger treat.
Every Star Wars: Starfighter Book
Star Wars: Starfighter arrives in theaters in May 2027. Shawn Levy directs, and Ryan Gosling stars as Kade Auberon. As you’d expect, Lucasfilm is going all-in on tie-ins.
For grown-ups, Phil Szostak writes The Art of Star Wars: Starfighter for Abrams. His art books are always excellent, packed with concept art and creator insights. Pablo Hidalgo also returns with the Star Wars: Starfighter Visual Dictionary from DK, due May 28, 2027. It covers new heroes, villains, species, ships, and locations.
Prefer prose? Delilah Dawson is writing an expanded novelization for Random House Worlds. Meanwhile, Marvel is launching a prequel miniseries, Star Wars: Starfighter: The Rock Pirate of Kaneen, written by Marc Guggenheim.
Younger fans get a full shelf of their own from Penguin Random House Kids:
- Rumble with the Rock Pirate (Little Golden Book)
- Outer Rim Outcasts
- Risk and Reward
- Rock Pirate Adventures
- The Starfighter junior novel
A coloring book rounds things out. Covers stay hidden until closer to the film, so we’ll update this section as they drop.

Manga, Retellings, and Coloring Books
Not every release on the Star Wars books 2027 list needs to be serious. Some are just fun.
Random House Worlds is re-releasing Star Wars: A New Hope — The Complete Manga. If you missed it the first time, now’s your chance. The manga adaptation offers a genuinely different take on a story you’ve seen a hundred times.
Mad Cave Studios is also getting in on the action. First, there’s Triple Take, a new A New Hope retelling told from “a certain point of view.” Second, it’s adapting the Phineas and Ferb Star Wars special into comic form. Yes, that one. Somehow, it’s still delightful.
Finally, Insight Editions has Star Wars: A New Hope: The Official Funko POP! Coloring Book. It recreates iconic scenes with big-headed Funko versions of the characters. It’s silly, but kids will love it, and so will plenty of adults.
These are perfect gift-guide picks. They’re also a solid way to introduce younger fans to the original film during its anniversary year.

Dungeons & Dragons Meets Star Wars
Here’s a crossover nobody saw coming a few years ago. Wizards of the Coast is bringing Star Wars to Dungeons & Dragons. The tabletop role-playing game was first announced at Gen Con 2026. At NYCC, fans finally got a first look at concept art and the cover.
Technically, it’s a game rather than a book. However, tabletop sourcebooks tend to land right next to novels on fans’ shelves. So it earns a spot here.
The appeal is obvious. Star Wars has a long tabletop history, from West End Games to Fantasy Flight. Pairing the galaxy with D&D’s massive player base could bring in an entirely new crowd. Imagine your regular Friday-night group swapping dragons for TIE fighters.
Details on rules and setting remain thin for now. Still, it’s arguably the wildest entry among this year’s announcements. We’ll update this section once Wizards shares more.
