Nathan Fillion called “that Joss Whedon show” “good sci-fi” along with Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica on Castle.

Fillion, who starred as Captain “Mal” Reynolds on the short-lived Joss Whedon show Firefly, hasn’t forgotten his Browncoat roots (Firefly fans call themselves “Browncoats” after the Resistance fighters on the show). Even though the show only lasted 14 episodes 10 years ago, he still manages to sneak a reference in his latest show Castle every now and then.

Yesterday, the mystery show had a science-fiction themed episode, called “The Final Frontier”, directed by former Star Trek: The Next Generation star Jonathan Frakes. The plot centered on a science fiction convention and a fictional science-fiction show called ‘Nebula-9’. During the investigation Richard Castle and Sam Beckett (Stana Katic) talked about the show.

“They were cancelled over a decade ago after 12 episodes, which was 12 episodes too many.” Castle says.

“I thought you would be a fan.” Detective Beckett says.

“I’m a fan of good science fiction,” Castle complains,”‘Star Trek’ ‘Battlestar’ that Joss Whedon show, but ‘Nebula-13’? No. Its all phony melodrama and lifeless acting.”

    Firefly fans rejoiced.

Castle airs Monday nights at 10PM EST on ABC. You can watch Castle online at http://abc.go.com/Castle/

Are you glad Nathan Fillion is keeping the Firefly light burning? Have you seen Castle? Do you have a favorite show that you consider “good science-fiction?”

Yes, we did rejoice! Dig Castle and that's one of the reasons.

I'm watching Firefly on Netflix right now. I couldn't help but notice he's put on a bit of weight since then.

      Ha! That's pretty cool.

I loved this episode of Castle and I was so happy with all of the Firefly references! I was so excited for this episode to air, especially after my coworker at DISH told me about how many Firefly references were in it, and I’m very happy with how it turned out. It’s so hard to watch everything that is on TV on Monday nights, so thankfully my Hopper from DISH records all four major networks with the PrimeTime Anytime feature, and I don’t have to miss anything that is on. I really think this has been one of the best seasons so far and I can’t wait for more of it. I can’t wait to see what can happen next!

Firefly is definitely one of the great ones. Hopefully someday we'll see a Firefly sequel.

Alex, Castle is a well-written show, but Fillion's charms makes it work.

Firefly is awesome Natasha. Castle is a good show too, but not in the same way. No Reavers 😉
