N is for Native American, today’s post for the A-Z Blogging Challenge 2012.

When you think science fiction, the phrase “Native American” probably doesn’t immediately leap to mind. Yet Native American authors such as Gerald Vizenor and William Sanders have been writing and featuring prominently in science fiction for decades. Now this lesser-known genre is getting its due in the first Native science fiction anthology called Walking the Clouds: An Anthology of Indigenous Science Fiction. The book was edited by Grace Dillon, an associate professor in the Indigenous Nations Studies program at Portland State University in Oregon. All royalties from the book go towards an annual writing contest called Imagining Indigenous Futurisms, which offers a $1,000 prize to promote indigenous science fiction. If you’ve never seen or read Native sci-fi, this anthology is a great place to start.
