The new trailer for Mortal Kombat II, the follow-up to its 2021 video game adaptation, has finally been released by Warner Bros. The role of Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban in the B-movie, takes the stage in this new clip in all his schlocky glory.
The sequel was initially revealed in 2022, and the goal of the trailer is to immerse viewers in the graphic action.
Mortal Kombat II will focus more on its titular to-the-death martial arts tournament than the first movie, which featured an original character fighting alongside and against series staples.
“They keep score throughout the movie,” Ed Boon, co-creator of Mortal Kombat, told Entertainment Weekly. “There’s a visual representation of who is winning… It’s not just a tournament for the sake of a tournament. There are huge consequences, so you really are keeping score. And there are a lot of twists in it that keep you on your toes.”
Cole Young (Lewis Tan), Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Jax (Mehcad Brooks), Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), Kano (Josh Lawson), and Kung Lao (Max Huang) are among the characters from the first movie who are lucky enough to survive and return to the fight. Even though the final two were largely eliminated in the first movie, they have returned in some way. Characters’ odd appearances will surely be explained in Mortal Kombat II, especially with the inclusion of revenants—undead fighters—in the film.
As previously established, Johnny Cage (Karl Urban), Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford), and Kitana (Adeline Rudolph) are joining the battle. Unlike the first movie, which traced Young’s path, Mortal Kombat II changes its emphasis to place Cage as the centre. It remains to be seen if the video game rival Street Fighter, which also seems to be putting together its impressive cast of Hollywood actors, will lose to the new-wave Mortal Kombat II.
Mortal Kombat II is headed for theaters on October 24, 2025.
