What If ‘Super Mario’ Was Designed in 2010? [Videogames]

Super Mario Bros is a classic videogame from the 80’s that revolutionized the platform genre. Since then, videogames have changed a lot with different priorities. Game designer Zack Hiwiller asked the question, what would happen if it had been created today? Here’s the result. Having played a lot of Android games lately, I would say it’s more like “what if Mario was remade as a ‘free-to-play’ mobile game.” Click the arrows to cycle through the images:

What do you think? How else have videogames changed since Super Mario?

Publishing to Facebook would grow annoying after a while. The Scrabble game on my iPad asks that every time. And I'm not even on Facebook!

I want to see Super Mario redid as a first person shooter game. Or maybe Call of Duty: Mushroom Kingdom.

Or: "Super Mario Bros! A Hidden Object Adventure"

I've always loved super mario! I love their latest version–well except for the one set in space. The 3D gives me headaches.

"Super Mario Galaxy," nutschell? I can understand the headache – that one is really mind-blowing.

    6. Nigel Mitchell on October 16, 2012 11:30 pm

Gene, that is totally true, LOL

Somebody did do a first-person Mario, Pat (see geekbits), but "Call of Duty," that would be hilarious. Mario would become a gritty soldier, nicknamed "Super Mario" because of his skill in combat. But he's tragically addicted to mushrooms, which enhance his battle abilities, like slowing down time.

I loved a review of "Burnout" on iOS that said, "What Burnout doesn't seem to understand is that no one I know on Facebook cares about my score on lap 15."

    9. Pat Dilloway on October 17, 2012 12:00 am

Yeah after I typed that I remembered you did already show the first person shooter thing. But the other idea sounds awesome! Go pitch that to Nintendo for the Wii 2.
