Darth Plagueis the Wise stands among the most intriguing characters in Star Wars lore—a Sith Lord shrouded in mystery, deception, and dark power. First referenced in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, his legend centers around mastery over midi-chlorians to create life and cheat death, only to be betrayed and murdered by his own apprentice, Darth Sidious. Over time, Plagueis has evolved from a cryptic mention in a film to a subject of novels, canon adaptations, and fan fascination.
Who Is Darth Plagueis the Wise? Sith Legend Explained

Darth Plagueis’ history begins with Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. In the classic opera scene, Supreme Chancellor Sheeve Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid), secretly Darth Sidious, tells Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) the Sith legend of Darth Plagueis the Wise. He explains that the Force user was so powerful that he was able to control the midacholorans to an incredible degree. He was so powerful that he could control and restore life. Palpatine also revealed that his student killed him.
Later, it was revealed that Palpatine was a Sith Lord and Plaguies was Darth Sidious’ mentor. He used this information to manipulate Anakin into betraying the Jedi Order.
Darth Plagueis Origins and Early Sith Training
Originally, creator George Lucas intended the story of the Sith Lord to be a lie. But he later decided to use the story to deepen the backstory of Emperor Palpatine.
When the first canon novel, the self-titled Star Wars: Darth Plagueis, was being developed, the writer asked for permission to expand his backstory. Lucas gave Luceno some artist renderings of Plagueis showing that he was a Muun. While the book isn’t canon (officially in the Star Wars timeline), several elements of the story have been adapted for later works.
The book establishes that he was raised with wealth, intelligence, and political influence on the planet Mygeeto. When he was young, he was recruited into the Sith tradition. He was trained to value strategy over brute strength, and this brutality led to his cruelty.
Training Under the Dark Side and Early Experiments
Plaguies was known as “Wise” because he deeply studied ancient Sith teachings and was not afraid to explore forbidden knowledge. Midi-chlorians are sentient microscopic organisms that enable beings to wield the power of the Force. The Sith Lord tried to control the Force with science, by practicing Sith alchemy and Force manipulation. His goal was to create life.
Unfortunately, by accidentally creating Anakin Skywalker, his plans backfired. Skywalker became the prophesied “Chosen One” who restored balance to the Force by destroying the Sith.
Midi-Chlorian Experiments and Immortality Powers
He claimed he had the ability to prevent others from dying. Healing is a common Force Power, as was seen in The Last Jedi with Rey and Ben Solo. He took this power to unnatural levels to heal and resurrect life.
He tested the limits of life extension through the Dark Side, and this inspired legends of immortality among Sith followers. This inspired Sith followers to resurrect Palpatine.
Darth Plagueis and the Sith Rule of Two
The Sith “Rule of Two” has recently changed significantly. But at its core, there is only one Master and Apprentice. This led to Darth Plagueis’ death and led to the rise of Palpatine. He underestimated Darth Sidious’s lust for “unlimited power.”
He selected the ambitious young Palpatine as an apprentice, thinking he could control him. The Sith Lord taught him political strategy and Force techniques and helped engineer Republic instability behind the scenes. The knowledge he gave fueled Sidious’s rise to become the Emperor of the Galaxy.
How Darth Plagueis Was Betrayed and Killed
Sidious grew more powerful and impatient to gain his Master’s power. Plagueis believed he had conquered death. This was tested when he was murdered in his sleep by his own apprentice. Ironically, “he could save others from death, but not himself.”
It’s a classic example of Sith betrayal under the Rule of Two. Darth Sidious manipulated his apprentices to kill his former student in a twisted form of the rule. Ironically, Anakin also killed his former master. But it wasn’t to become a Sith Lord.
Canon vs Legends: What’s Official Today
What is Plagueis canon vs Legends? Until recently, the only canon part of Darth Plagueis’ history was the opera house story. The Legends novel provides a detailed biography, but Disney continuity removed and contradicted many backstory elements.
Over the years, fans have debated which version is definitive. That is, until The Acolyte.
Darth Plagueis in Movies, TV, and Star Wars Canon

The creators of the 2024 Disney+ Star Wars show introduced Darth Plagueis the Wise in live-action. The most important thing it confirmed that his alien race is one of the tall, pale humanoid species Muun, seen as the InterGalactic Banking clan in Attack of the Clones.
The newly released The Art of Star Wars: The Acolyte book reveals what showrunner Leslye Headland had in mind for Darth Plagueis’ future in the High Republic Era. They intended to make the Dark Lord of the Sith a major threat in the next season, bringing the Sith lineage full circle by introducing Sheev Palpatine’s future Sith Master.
“I had always wanted the end of the season to introduce Plagueis,” Headland said, “Having him come in in the middle felt like it was going to be too loaded. So we decided to establish the era, the main characters, and the storyline, and then put Plagueis in as the larger threat.”
This obviously isn’t going to happen now, but he’s still important for the future of Star Wars.
Why Darth Plagueis Still Matters to Star Wars Lore
After the cancellation of The Acolyte, one of the key unresolved mysteries surrounding Star Wars is whether Lucasfilm will ever return to one of the most famous of Star Wars Sith Lords. Darth Plagueis. Darth Plagueis’ history has a lot of promise based on non-canonical materials (and Headland was a self-described lover of Legends and the pre-Disney Expanded Universe).
