Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker (2019) – Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) |
Recent photos of Billy Dee Williams have shown him walking with a stylish cape and cane. It turns out the handle of his cane has his name inscribed on it. Not just any name. It’s Lando’s full name and it’s epic.
Endor Express shared a close-up of the cane handle on Instagram.
The name is written in Aurebesh the standard written language in the Star Wars universe.
His full name is Baron Landonis Balthazar Calrissian III. Considering how long it is it’s not surprising that Landonis just goes by Lando.
Lando Calrissian first appears in Empire Strikes Back as the leader of Cloud City. He soon finds himself caught up in the Empire’s plans to kidnap Han Solo and deliver Luke Skywalker to Darth Vader. He finds redemption in Return of the Jedi as a Rebel Assault leader and freedom fighter.
Lando is played by Williams in the original trilogy and Donald Glover in the prequel film Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Williams recently told Variety that the name Calrissian helped him flesh out his character. “The cape and the name ‘Calrissian,’ which is Armenian,” Williams said. “I thought those were two interesting things to build a character around. It really suits my approach to expressing myself as a creative entity. It took me in a direction that said to me, ‘This is going to be a bigger-than-life character’.”
A hint was given to his real name in Solo when his faithful but acerbic droid L3-37 says “Landonis you don’t want to press that button with me.” Last year, the screenwriter John Kasdan gave Lando’s full name on Twitter saying, “It’s actually Landonis Balthazar Calrissian III and we recorded [Phoebe Waller-Bridge] saying that but to put in his full name would’ve meant re-editing like two weeks before we had to lock picture and I was told we couldn’t. Another regret.”
In the expanded universe of Star Wars comics and movies, Lando’s full name is “Lando Calrissian Junior”. Which is kind of underwhelming but does point to Lando Calrissian being a family name.
I’ve never thought that Lando Calrissian is short for anything. But now that I’ve heard it it’s the greatest name in the history of names. Also, it points to an upgrade to his status. Apparently, since his time in Return of the Jedi, he became a baron. Knowing Lando’s become a baron is just perfection.
Baron is Lando’s real first name. Does that mean we should all start calling him Baron? Actually. That fits him perfectly. Long live Baron.
