Turns out humans make terrible neighbors on a galactic scale. In Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos, writer Dan Watters and artist Kyle Hotz launch a six-issue DC Elseworlds series where the human race is the enemy. And the guy stuck in the middle? Hal Jordan, now fighting for the Green Lantern Corps against his own species. Here’s everything we know about Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos before it hits shelves.

What Is Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos?

There’s a new six-issue limited series from DC Comics, and it’s flipping the script. It’s called Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos, and it lands under the Elseworlds banner. Like every alternate universe comic in that line, it pulls familiar heroes out of their usual setting. Then it drops them into a world that looks nothing like the one we know.

The news arrived shortly after NYCC 2026. Why the timing? HBO’s Lanterns series is riding a serious wave of popularity right now. So DC is clearly trying to catch that wave with Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos. Honestly, we can’t blame them. Strike while the ring is charged, right?

The best part about Elseworlds books is that they tell standalone stories. In other words, you don’t need to read a hundred back issues to catch up. Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos works for longtime Corps fans and curious newcomers alike. Plus, Elseworlds stories have zero obligation to protect the status quo. As a result, anything can happen to anyone.

    The Empire of Humanity Premise

    Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos (2027)

So here’s the big idea. Usually, humans from Earth are the heroes, or at least the plucky new kids in the universe. In Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos, however, humans are the enemy. For centuries, the Empire of Humanity has conquered the universe one planet at a time. Every world it touches eventually kneels.

The only thing standing in the way is a heavily militarized Green Lantern Corps. Forget the space cops handing out cosmic parking tickets. These Lanterns are soldiers fighting a war they might lose. Consequently, Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos flips the classic “Earth’s protector” setup completely on its head.

If this sounds a little familiar, you’re not imagining things. Warhammer 40K is a massive science-fantasy franchise set in a brutal, dystopian future. In it, humanity battles countless enemies with heavily armored warriors and over-the-top weaponry. Fans online have already spotted echoes of that grimdark vibe in Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos. Still, the twist here is sharper. In 40K, humanity is fighting to survive. Here, humanity is the monster everyone else is surviving.

    The Sword of Azrael Connection

So how did humanity become the galaxy’s biggest bully? Surprisingly, the answer goes back to an earlier Dan Watters comic. According to Watters, Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos grew from a seed he planted years ago.

“The idea grew from a seed we planted back in 2022’s Sword of Azrael – the idea that St. Dumas found a broken Mother Box during the 12th century,” Watters explained. “Doomed Cosmos is what would have happened if that box wasn’t broken. If the crusaders had suddenly accessed New Gods technology.”

That’s a wild what-if, and it explains a lot. In Azrael lore, St. Dumas is the medieval crusader behind the fanatical Order of St. Dumas. Meanwhile, Mother Boxes are the sentient super-computers of the New Gods. Now imagine religious zealots from the 1100s getting their hands on working Fourth World tech. Suddenly, a crusade on Earth becomes a crusade across the stars.

As a result, the Empire of Humanity in Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos isn’t just random villainy. It’s centuries of holy war, supercharged by Jack Kirby’s cosmic gadgets. Honestly, that’s a terrifying combination. It also makes Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos a must-read for Sword of Azrael fans hunting for Easter eggs.

    Hal Jordan’s Betrayal and Redemption

Of course, every war story needs a soldier caught between two sides. In Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos, that soldier is Hal Jordan. Once upon a time, Hal fought on behalf of humanity. He was a loyal warrior of the Empire, marching from world to world.

Then everything fell apart. Hal’s battle-brother Oliver Queen betrayed him and left him for dead on an alien world. Yes, that Oliver Queen. Green Arrow as the guy who stabs Hal in the back is a gut punch. After all, the Hard-Traveling Heroes friendship ranks among DC’s most iconic pairings.

Surprisingly, the Green Lantern Corps rescued Hal and deprogrammed him. Now he’s the Corps’ only human warrior. That makes him a powerful strategic weapon in its war against humankind. Meanwhile, Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos promises to drag Hal through the burning ruins of a twisted DC Universe. DC even teases that his journey reaches the shores of Hell itself. No pressure, Hal. Fighting your own species is clearly the easy part of Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos.

Meet the Doomed Cosmos Creative Team

A wild premise only works with the right people steering the ship. Fortunately, Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos has a strong crew behind it. Dan Watters writes the series. Meanwhile, Kyle Hotz handles interior art and the main cover. Dan Brown provides colors, and Steve Wands letters the book.

Kyle Hotz is a smart pick for this kind of story. His art leans gritty, grotesque, and a little unsettling. That style might feel out of place on a shiny, hopeful Green Lantern book. For Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos, though, it fits like a power ring. War is ugly, and Hotz isn’t afraid to draw ugly.

Additionally, early coverage notes that this is Hotz’s first longer project for DC. That alone makes Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos worth watching. Watters, for his part, has a knack for darker, stranger takes on familiar characters. Together, they seem ready to push the Elseworlds format to its limits. Based on the preview pages, Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos already looks unlike any Lantern book on the stands.

The War-Movie Look of Doomed Cosmos

    Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos (2027)

Now let’s talk about the look, because this is where Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos really stands apart. Kyle Hotz says he wants to balance over-the-top space opera with the emotional beats of the story. To get there, he took an interesting approach.

Hotz has been a Green Lantern fan since he was a kid. However, his real prep involved studying some of the best war films ever made. Think less Star Wars and more Saving Private Ryan in deep space. As a result, the Lanterns in Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos look beat up, exhausted, and outgunned.

Their armor is cracked and broken. Their weapons are held together with tape and wire. According to Hotz, these are soldiers nearing the end of their fight. That’s a huge shift from the sleek, glowing uniforms we usually see.

Honestly, that underdog angle might be the secret weapon of Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos. Fans love rooting for the scrappy side. Furthermore, the preview pages show green energy blasts, armored aliens, and chaotic battlefields. Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos looks dirty, desperate, and seriously cool.

Release Date, Price, and Variant Covers

So when can you actually get your hands on it? Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos #1 arrives on January 20, 2027. You’ll find it at participating comic book shops and digital retailers. Mark your calendar, because January is usually a quiet month for big launches.

The debut issue runs 32 pages and costs $4.99 for the main cover. If you’re a variant hunter, DC has plenty to tempt you. Björn Barends, Steve Beach, and Ashley Wood each provide card stock variant covers. Those run $5.99 apiece. Additionally, Barends delivers a foil variant cover priced at $7.99.

Collectors should pay attention here. First issues of Elseworlds books often move fast, especially with eye-catching foil covers. Therefore, pre-ordering Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos is the safest move. Ask your local shop to add it to your pull list before the final order cutoff. That way, you won’t end up hunting eBay listings in February.

Finally, digital readers can grab Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos on release day too. Either way, you’ve got options.

Green Lantern Comics to Read First

Technically, you don’t need any homework before Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos. It’s an Elseworlds story, after all. Still, knowing the “normal” Hal Jordan makes the twisted version hit harder. So here are a few books worth grabbing while you wait for January.

First up is Green Lantern: Rebirth. Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver brought Hal back and rebuilt the modern Corps. It’s the cleanest introduction to who Hal is supposed to be. That contrast makes Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos even more fun.

Next, check out Sinestro Corps War. This is the Green Lantern Corps at full-scale war, and it’s spectacular. If you want to see Lanterns as soldiers, start here.

For another alternate take, try Green Lantern: Earth One. It reimagines Hal’s origin in a grounded, sci-fi setting. Then grab DC Finest: Green Lantern – Hard-Traveling Heroes. Denny O’Neil and Neal Adams sent Hal and Ollie on a road trip across America, and comics were never the same. That friendship is exactly what Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos tears apart. Reading it first makes Ollie’s betrayal sting a whole lot more. And of course, Sword of Azrael is essential reading if you want the backstory behind the Empire.

Final Thoughts on Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos

Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos takes DC’s most hopeful space cops and drops them into a war they’re losing. Humanity as the bad guy is a bold swing, and the Sword of Azrael roots give it real depth. Meanwhile, Hal versus Ollie adds a genuine emotional sting. With Watters and Hotz steering, this Green Lantern Elseworlds could be January’s sleeper hit. So mark January 20 on your calendar and pester your local shop now.
