2018 MTV Movie Awards: Chadwick Boseman gives James Shaw Jr. “Best Hero” award |
The Marvel film “Black Panther” swept the 2018 MTV Movie Awards with five wins.
Marvel’s Black Panther has already won the box office, but now it’s the biggest winner at the 2018 MTV Movie Awards. Ryan Coogler’s epic film won in the categories of “Best Movie”, “Best Performance in a Movie” (Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther), “Best Hero” (Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther), “Best Villain” (Michael B. Jordan as N’Jadaka/Erik Killmonger), and “Best Fight” (Chadwick Boseman vs. Winston Duke). No other movie or TV show has taken home more than four MTV awards.
The best moment of the night came when Chadwick Boseman gave his popcorn award to James Shaw Jr. Shaw is the man who wrestled an assault-style rifle from a shooter at a “Waffle House” in Tennessee. He was grazed by a bullet and burned by the barrel of the gun as he fought with the alleged gunman Travis Reinking.
“Receiving an award for playing a superhero is amazing, but it’s even greater to acknowledge the heroes that we have in real life,” Boseman said. “So I just want to acknowledge somebody that’s here today. James Shaw Jr. Where are you? Stand. If you don’t know James Shaw Jr., he fought off a gunman in Antioch, Tennessee at a Waffle House. He saved lives. Come on up here.” Chadwick Boseman gave Shaw the award saying “this is going to live at your house”.
Netflix’ “Stranger Things” was the other big genre winner of the night taking home awards for “Best Performance in a Show” (Millie Bobby Brown) and “Best Show”.
This is the second Marvel movie to take home an MTV award and the third Disney film to pull one. Marvel’s The Avengers won “Best Movie” back in 2013 and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” took home the award in 2016.
The movie about a leader of a fictional highly-advanced African nation fighting to save his country just took one more step to be a movie starring real-life superheroes. Besides taking home more MTV awards than any other property they also honored a “real-life” hero. Great job Mr. Boseman.
Next stop: the Oscars.
Do you think “Black Panther” deserves the MTV awards?
