Which Black Actor May Be Playing Shazam? [Movies]

    Dwayne Johnson and Shazam

A Shazam movie may be coming and the casting choice will surprise you.
    Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
recently spoke about an upcoming superhero
movie and it’s hard to find a role that fits for him.

“I will say this. There’s a character out there that we’re going to
announce very soon that I’m going to play, and I’ll just say this: This
character has the power of Superman, he can throw down. Just say the
word. That’s all I’m going to say.”

While he’s not naming the character specifically there are very few
Marvel characters that fit that description.  Tellingly, UGO
Networks said, “At his best, Captain Marvel [also known as Shazam] has
always been Superman with a sense of crazy, goofy fun.”

In the past, Johnson said that he wanted to play Green Lantern and
Black Adam, but finally seemed to settle on a “Big Guy” that he can
    play.

For those unfamiliar, Captain Marvel first appeared in Whiz
Comics #2 in 1940. The story is that a 12-year-old boy, named Billy
Batson, meets a wizard who gives him the power of seven heroes when he
says their names in an acronym: S.H.A.Z.A.M. which stands for Solomon
(wisdom), Hercules (strength), Atlas (stamina), Zeus (power), Achilles
(courage) and Mercury. (speed). The character was bought by DC in 1973
and published under the title Shazam.

Here’s an interview he did for Hercules where he talks about his upcoming role.

Niki Fine leaked a possible Warner Bros. DC movie schedule that listed Shazam as one of the upcoming movies:

    • May 2016: Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice
    • July 2016: Shazam
    • December 2016: Sandman
    • May 2017: Justice League
    • July 2017: Wonder Woman
    • December 2017: Flash and Green Lantern Team-Up
    • May 2018: Man of Steel 2

It’s assumed DC will announce his role at this months San Diego
Comic-Con. If indeed he’s playing Shazam, it’ll be yet another
race-bending casting since Johnson is half-Black and half- Samoan and the character is typically White.
    Prepare for the fanboy outrage.

    What do you think of
    The Rock playing Shazam?

I can see him in the role.
Remember the cheesy kids' show from the 70's? Yeah, I watched it…

I had not realized Shazam is actually an acronym. It's not something they mention in the newer comics. Are they still going to do the thing where Billy Batson is a kid who turns into the Rock? I'm not sure how audiences would go for that as it's kind of a goofy idea.

What's interesting in comic book lore is that Captain Marvel at one point in the 40s was more popular than Superman, leading DC to sue for copyright infringement, which eventually shut the character down.

wait who is this Dwayne Johnson guy… never heard of him? Ha! I think the world of super heroes is open to anyone who can fit the shoes or the cape, I want more super films. Pay attention to the storyline over the special effects we all will win.

Does he have mussels? He would do fine!

    5. Tony Laplume on July 22, 2014 8:04 pm

It'd be interesting to know if he plays it comically or in action mode, or a blending of the two.

    6. Maurice Mitchell on July 24, 2014 2:38 am

Knowing the Rock it'll be a blend Tony.

    7. Maurice Mitchell on July 24, 2014 2:39 am

      He was super groovy Alex.

    9. Maurice Mitchell on July 24, 2014 2:44 am

Knowing him I'm guessing they'll keep the kid angle but it could be goofy. It's hard to believe anyone was more popular than Superman.
