10 Biggest Box Office Superhero Actors of All Time [Movies]

There have been a lot of superhero movies in the last few decades – some successful, some not. The actors themselves don’t always get a payday, but they often make a lot of money for their studios. This all brings up the question, “Who Is The Most Successful Superhero Actor?” MTV’s Splash Page crunched the numbers and came up with this list of the most financially successful (for the studios) movie actors of all time.

    The criteria they used included:

    • Actor has to have appeared in more than one film playing the same character
    • Actor must have headlined at least one of those films
    • Box office totals for films in which they made a cameo appearance were not included

    Here’s the list:

    10. Jennifer Garner as Elektra – $165,260,300 (“Daredevil” “Elektra”)

    9. Wesley Snipes as Blade – $297,914,500 (“Blade” “Blade II” “Blade: Trinity”)

    8. Chris Evans as Captain America – $786,218,900 (“Captain America: The First Avenger” “Marvel’s the Avengers”)

    7. Chris Hemsworth as Thor – $787,927,400 (“Thor” “Marvel’s the Avengers”)

    6. Michael Keaton as Batman – $811,397,900 (“Batman” “Batman Returns”)

    5. Christopher Reeve as Superman – $947,371,200 (“Superman” “Superman II” “Superman III” “Superman IV: The Quest For Peace”)

    4. Hugh Jackman as Wolverine – $990,307,600 (“X-Men” “X2: X-Men United” “X-Men: The Last Stand” “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”)

    3. Christian Bale as Batman – $1,301,408,500 (“Batman Begins” “The Dark Knight” “The Dark Knight Rises”)

    2. Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man – $1,417,748,800 (“Spider-Man” “Spider-Man 2” “Spider-Man 3”)

    1. Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man – $1,459,097,500 (“Iron Man” “Iron Man 2” “Marvel’s the Avengers” “Iron Man 3”)

What do you think of the list? Any surprises? Who do you think if the most successful superhero actor?

Not that surprising, though it would probably be different if they adjusted for inflation and add-ons like 3D and IMAX which largely were not available in the 70s-90s.

Interesting. I wouldn't have guessed Robert Downey, Jr.

    3. Alex J. Cavanaugh on May 15, 2013 11:58 pm

Jennifer Garner – that is really surprising. Nice to see Snipes on the list.

      I forgot about Elektra.

I thought Spider-Man or Batman would be number one.

    5. DAVID WALSTON on May 16, 2013 1:17 pm

Elektra? Really? I guess they over paid.

    6. Tony Laplume on May 16, 2013 3:20 pm

Elektra! It still amuses me that everyone loved her in Daredevil but hated her in her own movie. Smacks of latent sexism to me.

I am totally an Iron Man person, so I guess I can't complain.
