“With minimal fanfare and next to no audience, Invasion of a Small World debuted in the summer of 2016, and after a brief and disappointing run, the series was deservedly shelved.” As a scifi fan, I think we’ve all shared the experience of having a favorite TV show that few people watched, and was canceled after a handful of episodes. Sometimes, we’re vindicated by having the show achieve recognition after the fact. So what if a little known show with a tiny but rabid fanbase turned out to be the most important show in the history of Mankind? That’s the…

There’s been a lot of debate recently about the role of female artists and writers in the comic book industry, mainly because the recent reboot of DC left only a fraction of women left on the payroll. Much of the debate revolves around the idea that if women drew superheroes, there would be less sexist portrayals of women. This reminded me of when artist Joe Phillips caused a bit of a stir with a gallery show of iconic male superheroes with the kind of blatantly provocative poses and outfits as female superheroines. In the interest of furthering the debate (and…

Jim Shooter, former editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics, recently wrote about the origin of G.I. JOE on his blog. It’s a great read and most of it was unknown to me, and might be to you. Here are the ten most surprising parts of the story. 1. G.I. JOE started in a men’s room – According to Shooter, the collaboration between Marvel and G.I. Joe started in 1981 when Marvel President Jim Galton and Hasbro CEO Stephen Hassenfeld met in a men’s room at a charity fundraiser. Their conversation went towards their respective companies, and they decided to collaborate, which led…

You hardcore Trekkers may already know this, but I didn’t: Brent Spiner, the actor who played Lt. Data on Star Trek: TNG does a spot-on impression of Patrick Stewart. I stumbled across this video at the Mary Sue and it floored me. I didn’t even know Spiner did impressions at all! But doing a search revealed that Spiner’s done this impression many times for fans. Still, I don’t think it will ever get old. [Via Mary Sue]

There’s a new scifi novel called Ready Player One that’s been getting a lot of buzz. On the surface, it seems kind of clichéd – it’s set in a dystopian future where everyone lives in an online computer-generated reality called OASIS, yada, yada, yada. The twist is the story about a massive treasure hunt being conducted in OASIS to find its creator’s vast fortune, where players must follow clues based on the creator’s childhood. The novel centers on one disaffected player who stumbles across a major clue, and becomes the target of various groups trying to find the treasure. The…

There’s been a lot of buzz on the Net about a “steampunk Robocop” statue made of scrap metal. While it’s a nice statue, I strongly disagree. Anyone who would call that a steampunk Robocop knows nothing about steampunk. Steampunk is supposed to be a retro-Victorian approach to modern technology. There’s nothing steampunk about this statue, except for a few gears. It’s just a regular statue of Robocop. In the words of Crocodile Dundee, that’s not a steampunk Robocop. That’s a steampunk Robocop. (from sykomonkey on deviantART) Or that (by choubaka360). “Living or deceased, you shall accompany me…creep.” You can actually…

It all started with a comic strip. Specifically, it started with a comic strip called Dinosaur Comics, a surreal series with dinosaurs discussing philosophical and existential issues. In one comic, a dinosaur proposed a story about a machine that predicts your precise manner of death. It provides no dates or details, and can be annoyingly vague in its predictions, but is always accurate. The comic was just supposed to be a one-off joke, but readers seized on the idea until the creator compiled an anthology of stories based on the concept. The result was Machine of Death: A Collection of…

A few years ago, Marvel launched an ambitious plan to set up their team superhero movie, The Avengers. To do that, Marvel needed to set up all the heroes that make up the team, and Captain America is the last to get his turn. However, Captain America: First Avenger needed to be a good movie on its own, to bring the audience on-board. Did they succeed? Yes. And no.

I’m going to commit geek blasphemy here, and say I never really liked Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson in the Spider-Man movies. I mean, Dunst was okay, but not the supermodel MJ was in the comics. That’s why I got really excited to hear Emma Stone was playing Gwen Stacy, Spiderman’s girlfriend in the new Amazing Spider-Man movie. I think Stone is a vast improvement, visually speaking. What do you think? Let’s just put Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone side-by-side. Who’s hotter – Kirsten Dunst or Emma Stone?

We can only hope the upcoming Captain America movie is as good as the marketing campaign behind it. There’s a new poster online that’s causing quite a stir. The one-sheet (painted by Paolo Rivera) is designed to look like a vintage movie poster, which is cool enough. But the best part is the partial recreation of one of Captain America’s most famous covers, where he punches out Adolf Hitler. Always satisfying. Unfortunately, you’ll probably never see this poster in theaters. In fact, only a hundred of them were produced as prizes for the LA Times Hero Complex film festival, and…

In Return of the Jedi, we were introduced to the lovable teddy bear warriors of Endor, the Ewoks. Some people found the Ewoks cute. Other people found them annoying. But there’s one thing we can all agree on: the Ewoks looked delicious. They looked fat, but with all the running around and climbing they did, they would have to be pretty lean. That means they have plenty of meat on their bones. When you get the chance, here are five ways to serve Ewok. If no Ewok is available, substitute chicken, because (as everyone knows) Ewoks taste like chicken.

Ever wonder why the acting was so bad on Star Trek: Voyager? One reason can be placed squarely on the shoulders of the producers. Garrett Wang, who played Ensign Kim on the show, explained that producer Rick Berman told the human cast to act less human. “Berman informed us that he expected all actors portraying human roles to follow his decree. He told us that we were to underplay our human characters. He wanted our line delivery to be as military — and subsequently devoid of emotion — as possible, since this, in his opinion, was the only way to…
