It appears the frequently postponed, highly anticipated Batman Part II has a contingency plan to address its most recent setback, and it’s quite an excellent one, indeed. Steven Soderbergh—an experienced director known for independent hits and mainstream successes—is joining to help complete the main part of the filming. Filming on the superhero sequel featuring Robert Pattinson ground to a halt last week as director and co-writer Matt Reeves had to attend to a personal issue.

Steven Soderbergh Steps In to Finish Filming

According to Deadline, “Soderbergh has been [a] longtime admirer of Reeves’ work, and with Reeves unable to be on set, the Oscar-winning director offered to help with finishing principal photography on the film.” Additionally, “the two will work together and remain in communication until filming has ended, with Reeves taking over post-production duties when he is ready to return.”
“I thought Matt Reeves’ work on The Batman was stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent,” Soderbergh said in a statement. “The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what’s already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film.”
A Troubled Production Gets a Lifeline

The making of The Batman Part II has been troubled from the start, with the release date delayed by a whole year on two occasions. However, when Reeves ultimately declared the draft was complete, it appeared that matters were finally returning to normal. Fortunately, Soderbergh’s proposal allows Reeves to concentrate on his personal matters without the stress of another change to the release date.
Why Soderbergh Is a Gift to Matt Reeves
Let’s be honest: this could have gone a lot worse. Studios have swapped directors mid-shoot before, and the results are rarely pretty. Instead, Reeves gets a fellow filmmaker who openly admires his work and wants to protect it. Soderbergh isn’t coming in to put his own stamp on Gotham. His stated goal is matching the footage Reeves already shot, so the final film still feels like one vision. He’s also one of the fastest, most efficient directors working today. He often shoots his own movies under the alias Peter Andrews, so he knows how to keep a set moving. That matters on a production already dragged down by delays. Best of all, Reeves keeps control of post-production, where much of a movie’s final shape gets built. In other words, Reeves gets breathing room without losing his film. That’s not a replacement. That’s a friend holding the Bat-Signal steady until he gets back.
Matt Reeves Responds: “I Am Not Leaving”
Reeves also added his own statement on social media to clarify the change:
“Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II. I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography. Thank you to all for your concern and well wishes.”
The Batman Part II Release Date

Fingers crossed that everything proceeds as intended, and we’ll witness Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader on the planned release date of February 18, 2028. However, even if it doesn’t occur, this fandom has repeatedly shown that the outcome is worthwhile, regardless of its release timing.
The Batman Part II Cast

Featuring Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, The Batman Part II also includes The Batman alumni Andy Serkis as Alfred and Colin Farrell as the Penguin. The remainder of the cast features Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Brian Tyree Henry, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham, and Sebastian Koch.
