The Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow unites the Man of Steel with Lex Luthor to face a greater threat. Get the latest updates on James Gunn’s bold new DC movie.
James Gunn revealed some of the plot and villain of his Superman sequel, “The Man of Tomorrow,” during an appearance on “The Howard Stern Show.”
Watch the [NSFW] clip below:
Gunn claims that the essence of Luthor’s (Nicholas Hoult) character is his jealous rage at Superman and his abilities, which another extraterrestrial threat would directly exploit.
“That’s the center of Lex for me,” Gunn said. “Three years ago, before Superman came along, he was considered the greatest guy in the world, even with other metahumans and superheroes in the world. And then in one fell swoop, this guy comes in wearing a silly costume, with dimples, and a charming smile, and a great chin, and he’s forgotten.”
This is the latest news about the upcoming movie, which will include Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and David Corenswet as the Man of Steel. Previously, Gunn announced the title of the movie along with artwork by Jim Lee. He’s a renowned comic book artist and currently serves as the President and Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics. The image shows Lex Luthor in his infamous powersuit alongside Superman, who is holding a screwdriver.
Teaser art for the movie shows Luthor with Superman in his iconic battle suit, although it’s unclear exactly what that threat will be. The logical conclusion would be Brainiac, a villain with a tense past involving both Superman and Lex Luthor in various media, so it makes sense that he’s the villain.
In Superman, the first movie of Gunn’s new universe, the corporate tycoon tried to kill and damage the hero’s reputation; Superman defeated Lex Luthor (played by Nicholas Hoult).
The movie debuted on July 11 and made $614 million at the worldwide box office in 2025.
