Here comes a slight surprise. After gaining a cult following with its 1987 debut, the Spaceballs universe has been quiet for a while. However, according to a recent rumor regarding Spaceballs 3, Amazon MGM Studios is reportedly committed to bringing the series back. This assertion has already generated a lot of enthusiasm, even though no official announcement has been issued yet.
According to an insider post from MyTimeToShineHello on X (previously Twitter), Amazon MGM Studios is working on Spaceballs 3. The post claimed, “MGM already developing a SPACEBALLS 3.” Although the research was made public on July 6, 2025, Amazon has not yet provided an update on the project. But it feels like every movie gets a trilogy. even if it doesn’t deserve it.
This comes after earlier reports of a Spaceballs sequel starring the original cast. According to Deadline, it has been announced that Rick Moranis and Bill Pullman will return to their roles as Dark Helmet and Lone Starr. Lewis Pullman and Keke Palmer have also joined the cast in unspecified roles. But rumors suggest Pullman will be playing Starburst, the son of his father’s character. Mel Brooks is making a comeback as Yogurt, the role he played in the original 1987 movie.
In 2027, the next installment is scheduled for release in theaters. “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film” is how the project is titled.
Josh Greenbaum will direct the screenplay from Josh Gad, Dan Hernandez, and Benji Samit. Alongside Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Jeb Brody, Greenbaum, and Mel Brooks, Gad will also be a producer and star in the movie. Hernandez, Samit, Adam Merims, and Kevin Salter are executive producers.
MGM’s 1987 release of the first Spaceballs was a science fiction satire that drew inspiration from films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Star Wars. Mel Brooks, John Candy, Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, and Bill Pullman are among its stars. Over the years, the film has developed a sizable cult following, despite receiving mixed reviews.
Rick Moranis has mostly avoided acting since the late 1990s, so his role in Spaceballs 2 is a rare comeback. Meanwhile, Bill Pullman is still working in movies and television, with future parts in Famous and The Boroughs. Later in 2025, Keke Palmer is scheduled to make appearances in Good Fortune, I Love Boosters, and The Pickup.
Are you looking forward to Spaceballs 3?
