Fans of the Grid have been looking forward to this day for years. Tron: Ares, a movie in development for over 15 years, gets its debut trailer. Even before Tron: Legacy, a cult favorite that came out in 2010.
It doesn’t appear that the new movie follows up the Legacy threads at all in the first teaser for Ares. Instead, a new red grid is presented to us, along with inventions from that plane of existence that somehow make their way into the real world. This is the first look at Tron: Ares along with a new poster
.
This is a pretty early look at the movie, which comes out in October. We’re not shocked that the trailer doesn’t reveal a lot. However, it’s clear that director Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil) wants to give franchise fans something they’ve been dreaming about for decades—a full-scale invasion of the Grid into the real world.
What happens when you dump an A.I. right in the heart of a busy city is revealed in this sneak preview. Ares speeds by on his light-cycle and cuts police cars in two, but the police are unable to apprehend him. A massive Recognizer, the airborne aircraft visible in the Grid, looms overhead.
“I’m looking for something,” Ares responds, “something I do not understand.”
At CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Thursday, Leto and costar Jeff Bridges, who is making a comeback for his third franchise film following Tron in 1982 and Tron: Legacy in 2010, showed off some of the trailers. According to Leto, the upcoming movie will “hit you right in the Grid… wherever that is.”
Bridges went on, “It’s an incredible visual experience,” “You’re in for a treat.”
Bridges plays Kevin Flynn once more. He plays a programmer in the original Tron, who becomes trapped inside a computer mainframe and must communicate with other programs in order to get out. In the follow-up, Bridges reprises his role as Kevin, who, along with Clu, his digi-double, and the corrupt program that controls the Grid, delivers a message from the digi-world to his son Sam (Garrett Hedlund).
