It is possible that DC Studios discovered its Sgt. Rock in Gotham City’s filthy streets. Colin Farrell is now circling the part of Sgt. Rock is a movie directed by Challengers director Luca Guadagnino, who enjoys the praise of portraying another DC character on The Penguin as Oswald Cobblepot. This follows the news that Daniel Craig left the role last month.
Deadline answered any questions you might have and revealed the possible casting. No, it doesn’t matter if Farrell is the Penguin or Sgt. Rock. The latter is part of Matt Reeves’ Epic Crime Saga, while the former will be part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe. There are two distinct DC universes, and this casting announcement confirms that these realms will not overlap. I apologize to those who believed Robert Pattinson would be the next DC Batman. That ain’t happening.
According to Gunn and Safran, the project was a pleasant surprise for Sgt. Rock. They revealed earlier this year that they were on board because Guadagnino and Challengers writer Justin Kuritzkes brought something different to the table. Safran stated that Guadagnino and Kuritzkes have an intriguing idea about presenting this tale in the new DCU. “We love the idea of being able to tell something that, it’s a war movie.” It’s “a really compelling story about heroism in a time of armed conflict.”
Daniel Craig was first rumored to play the part, but Gunn and Safran clarified that he was never formally in negotiations. But this feels a lot more genuine. That is if Farrell can fit it into his hectic schedule. When we hear back from DC Studios, we’ll update this story.
How do you feel about Farrell playing Sgt. Rock? Would it be acceptable if he played two DC characters? Tell us in the comments below.
