Why the Iron Spider Suit Was Missing in SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME Trailers

Marvel pulled a ton of surprises from Spider-Man: Far From Home. The biggest is that Mysterio is a villain (although he’s always been a villain). But another lingering question is how could there be a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming if he died in Avengers: Infinity War? Marvel tried hard to avoid spoilers for Avengers: Endgame and his fate.

First a brief history of the Iron Spider armored suit.

Where Did the Iron Spider Suit Come From?

The suit first shows up in the Marvel “Civil War” storyline Amazing Spider-Man #529 (2006) by J. Michael Straczynski and Ron Garney. Peter Parker initially sides with Tony Stark for the Superhero Registration Act and he gives him a suit of armor that gives him additional powers and capabilities.

The first live-action appearance of the Iron Spider suit is at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017. Stark first takes away the suit he made for Peter. He later presents him with a new suit inspired by the Iron Man armor and welcomes him to the Avengers. Peter turns down the armor to continue working as a neighborhood Spider-Man.

But in Avengers: Infinity War Peter is fighting Thanos’ Black Order and gets stuck on the Q Ship as it travels into space. Spider-Man passes out from lack of oxygen and Tony orders the suit to cover him. He wears it for the rest of the film.

He dies after Thanos uses the Infinity Gaunlet to “Snap” half of life out of existance. Did he survive? Marvel was cagey but announced a sequel.

The first teaser trailer released January 15, 2019, shows Spider-Man in his familiar suit at the “Homeless Support” charity event. The scene at the charity event shows Spider-Man in his familiar red and blue suit.

In Endgame Peter is restored along with the rest of the people who disappeared during the “Blip”. He’s wearing the Iron Spider armor again.

In a video published after Endgame opened, on Jun 24, 2019, and in the final cut of the film, he’s wearing the armored suit Tony Stark gave him nicknamed “Iron Spider”. Why? Were the effects not ready? Did they change their mind during editing?

ComicBook got an interview with Julian Foddy a VFX Supervisor for Industrial Light & Magic who worked on the Spider-Man movie. He explained, “Well, there’s actually a more strategic reason for that which was that, well to a certain extent, yes, our Iron Spider suit was still in the development at the time that very early teaser trailer was released.” So the VFX were still being worked on, but he continued.

“It was actually more of a conscious decision by Marvel, because if we had shown that Spider-Man had the Iron Spider suit on Earth in the teaser trailer, don’t forget the teaser trailer came out before the release of Avengers: Endgame, it would have given away the reveal that he actually comes back to life or survives the whole Infinity War and Endgame blip,” Foddy added.

Marvel felt if audiences could see him in his armor it would reveal it took place after Infinity War. There were rumors Spider-Man 2 was set between Homecoming and Infinity War. This means he hadn’t taken the suit. Marvel was fueling expectations.

“Whereas I think prior to the release of Endgame, the timeline of whereabouts in the whole timeline Far From Home sat was ambiguous, so it was a conscious decision not to give that away as a reveal that he survives and makes it back to earth and has the Iron Spider suit in his possession,” Foddy said.

One more example of how Marvel expertly fools audiences to build expectations.

Make sure you read the whole interview “Spider-Man: Far From Home VFX Supervisor Julian Foddy on Updating the Iron Spider Suit, New Webbing, and More” since it’s really insightful.

Spider-Man: Far From Home comes to Blu-Ray and DVD on October 3, 2019. Spider-Man: Far From Home’s digital release from Amazon Video and iTunes hasn’t been announced but is expected to be available 1-2 weeks before the Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K releases. The estimated release date is September 2019.
