SPIDER-MAN FAR FROM HOME: The Returning Spider-Man Actor You Need to Know

Rumors suggest an actor from the Sam Raimi films may be coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This could be a major spoiler so I’ll put the full details after the warning banner but a major character from the comic books and the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy may be coming to the MCU.

We don’t post a lot of rumors, but this one is very exciting.

A lot of source material from the comics has been brought to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Characters like Aunt May and putting Peter Parker in high school are straight from the early comics.

But one character has been suspiciously absent: J. Jonah Jameson. He’s the publisher of the newspaper Peter takes pictures for named “The Daily Bugle”. The character was co-created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko and he first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #1 (1963). J.J. hates Spider-Man and launches a full-on media attack on the web-slinger.

J.J. serves as a major antagonist for Peter and Spider-Man since he fought with Jonah behind-the-scenes over money and coverage of the superhero. He also fought Jonah about his image as Spider-Man confronting him on several occasions.

His bluster and anger were first brought to the silver screen by Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons. Simmons is hilarious and, frankly, perfect in the role. While the guy is popular and appeared in the first three movies, the Marc Webb films never show him on-screen. It’s hinted that he works of Jameson though and an email shows him asking Jameson to take it easy on the hero. The response is no.

Webb was planning to introduce the Daily Bugle owner in later movies though. “I like the idea very much of him coming up in the next film,” Webb said during a Google+ Hangout promoting the upcoming release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. “It was more easy to accept a new Spider-Man than someone who could out do J.K. Simmons in that role, he is so iconic. That’s something we’ve really talked about. Obviously, I love that character because he poses such an interesting dilemma for Spider-Man. The answer is I don’t know, but I think you can expect to see him in the future.”

Now rumors and reports are swirling that J.J. may be coming to the next solo Spider-man movie Spider-Man: Far From Home. We don’t know in what form though. During an interview with Slashfilm, they asked executive producer Eric Hauserman Carroll if Jameson will be in the movie. “Yes, we’ve absolutely talked and thought about those characters a lot, specifically in reference to this film,” he said. “What we just want to make sure we’re [presenting] them in a way that doesn’t make you feel instantly like you’ve seen them before. So we have a couple of ideas, some of which I can’t really go into detail because they’re spoilery, but it’s absolutely – if we had an “in” for the Daily Bugle that wasn’t just your traditional newspaper…and Peter Parker, there’s this cool, weird thing happening where being a photographer isn’t necessarily a mark of distinction anymore. We all have better cameras in our pockets than most people even owned ten years ago. So how do we get Peter or somebody into that world without it feeling like, do kids really aspire to go be photographers for The New York Times anymore? Or do they aspire to have their tweet reposted, and so on.

“So we’re trying to pay as much homage to the source material as possible, and we do think there are a couple of fun ideas like that in here, most of which I don’t want to spell out for you, but absolutely. We want to take as much of the mythology that people love and present it in a way that’s totally faithful to what people love about it, but in a [different] way.”

When asked if it’s fair to say J. Jonah Jameson will not be in Spider-Man: Far From Home he said “no”. Which is a backward way of saying he’ll probably be in the movie. But who will he be played by? The first rumor has the MCU flipping the script using an actor of color.

We know that black actorcomedian Jerry Angelo Brooks (better known by his stage name J.B. Smoov) is in the movie but we don’t know who he plays. One rumor suggests that they’re casting him as the new J.J. His fast-talking style and rapid fire delivery would set him apart as the new character. While Jameson ios white in the comics, DC also recast a newspaper editor as a black man when they asked  Laurence Fishburne to play Perry White. Marvel could be running from the same playbook.

But an even more interesting rumor comes via several sources including Buzzfeed, Reddit and We Got This Covered. First, Michael Blackmon from Buzzfeed tweeted “Still thinking about #SpiderManFarFromHome (which might be my fave Spidey film now). Jake Gyllenhaal is incredible! A force! And the post-credits scene will make fans of the original Tobey Maguire movies nostalgic. Can’t wait to see it again!”

The rumor is that one of the post-credit scenes shows J. Jonah Jameson and he’s played by nonother than J.K. Simmons himself. One Reddit user named AdamDriverIsAwesome says “Yep. It’s a scene where he is swinging down Manhattan with MJ and when they land they look up and see the message from The Daily Bugle. It’s a news broadcast featuring Beck and they use it to create a menace of Spider-Man. Also J.K Simmons who played J. Jonah Jameson in the Raimi movies is back and is reprising his role as the MCU version of JJJ and that’s the big mind blown thing people have been talking about.”

Simmons himself has said he’d like to return to the role and has reprised his character in several voice acting roles.

Could this be true? We’ll find out soon since the movie Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theaters in two weeks!
