Birds of Prey (2002) – Caroline Lance / Black Canary (Lori Loughlin) |
Two actresses who appeared as a superhero and a scientist on TV have been caught up in the sting middle of a multi-million dollar college entrance scam.
Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin have been charged with knowingly breaking the law to try to get their kids into top-tier colleges. According to the FBI and the U.S Attorney’s office for the district of Massachusetts, the two were part of a national campaign to defraud top schools like UCLA, USC, Yale Georgetown, and Stanford. The two, along with 33 other parents, spent millions of bribes so their children could gain admission as recruited athletes. They weren’t actually athletes. Those charges could see Huffman and Loughlin behind bars for up to five years.
Lori Laughlin is best known for her role as Aunt Becky on the ABC sitcom Full House and Netflix’ Fuller House. But she’s had other roles too.
In 2002 Laughlin guest-starred on the short-lived WB superhero series Birds of Prey based on the comic books. The series is set in “New Gotham City” after the disappearance of Batman. Three women try to clean up the crime in the city as superheroes. Dina Meyer plays former Batgirl Barbara Gordon aka Oracle. Ashley Scott plays Helena Kyle aka Huntress. Rachel Skarsten plays Dinah Redmond (née Dinah Lance).
The series only lasted 13 episodes. Laughlin shows up in the episode “Sins of the Mother”. She plays Dinah’s mother Caroline Lance aka Black Canary.

On March 13, 2019, Laughlin turned herself over to the FBI. The FBI alleges that she and her husband paid $500,000, disguised as a donation to the Key Worldwide Foundation, to get their daughters into USC. The money was paid so that the University of Southern California’s admissions committee would believe that their two daughters would join the school’s women’s rowing team. Neither daughter had ever trained in the sport and had no plans to do so.
Felicity Huffman is best known for her role as Lynette Scavo on the ABC TV series Desperate Housewives. She’s won a Golden Globe Award, Independent Spirit Award, National Board of Review, and is an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. But back in 1993, she guest-starred as a scientist on the X-Files episode “Ice”.
The Fox series, which followed Agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) as they investigated the deaths of an Alaskan research team. Huffman plays one of the scientists driven mad by alien worms.
On March 12, 2019, she was arrested and charged in a nationwide college entrance exam cheating scandal. Prosecutors allege that Huffman gave a $15,000 donation to the charity Key Worldwide Foundation. Turns out the money was used to pay someone to pretended to be Huffman’s daughter and take the SAT for her. Huffman was arrested charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud, and released on $250,000 bail.
It’s kind of ironic that crime-fighter Black Canary would end up being arrested.
