Find out everything you probably missed in the new trailer for the superhero team-up Justice League.
In Justice League, Batman unites a team of metahumans—Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), the Flash (Ezra Miller), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) to defend the Earth from an alien invasion.
The trailer is full of amazing scenes, hilarious quips and fifteen pounds of awesome. But if you only watched it once there are some things you may have missed.
Here’s a breakdown of all the inside jokes, Easter eggs and references you may have missed in the Justice League trailer.
Warning: Contains possible spoilers for Justice League (2018)
1. Cyborg Hoodie
The first thing we see is Cyborg, played by Ray Fisher, wearing a hoodie.
Unlike the other superheroes, Cyborg has no secret identity. He can’t take off his giant gleaming robot parts. The best he can do is try an cover them. So he’s using a hoodie to cover up the helmet and glowing eye.
It’s also a nice reference to the Trayvon Martin killing. Since then the hoodie that he wore has become a symbol of the Black Lives Matter movement and standing up to injustice. Cyborg stays woke.
2. Changing Color Scheme
There’s been a big change in the look of the fight scenes in the film. In an early cut of the trailer, we see Batman against a dark and foreboding sky. That same shot now has vibrant red lighting.
There’s a shift in tone since the last trailer and a big part of that may be that Joss Whedon took over as director for the film.
3. The Dark Knight Lightning
One shot shows Batman crossing a flash of lightning. This is a reference to the classic graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns which also features Batman crossing a bolt of lightning.
This is the second time this reference was made since Batman v Superman did the same thing.
4. Return of Superman’s Shirt
The trailer opens with Lois Lane (Amy Adams) in the Kent farmhouse. She walks outside and sees a man standing in a cornfield. The camera pans around to reveal it’s Clark Kent AKA Superman. This is a dream sequence, but it’s worth noting that he’s wearing the same flannel shirt from Batman v Superman.
Update: Some have pointed out the shirt in BvS might be blue, not red
5. Man of Steel Theme
As the camera pans over to the field the theme for Man of Steel plays on the piano. “Main Theme” from the Man of Steel soundtrack was composed by Hans Zimmer. Even though this is Clark Kent, he’s still Superman.
6. Corn Field
The cornfield is symbolic of Superman’s death. At the funeral, the funeral party walked through fields of corn.
7. Cavill’s Mustache
Henry Cavill expected to finish shooting Justice League before he went to on to play an unnamed character in Mission: Impossible 6 (2018). Unfortunately, the reshoots of Justice League extended his shooting schedule into the production of MI6.
To play in Mission: Impossible 6 he had to grow a real mustache and his contract prevented him from shaving it off. Because of this Cavill’s mustache is digitally removed from the movie.
This shot is the first example of that and it looks pretty smooth. It’s a little strange as he turns his head but if you’re not looking for it you wouldn’t notice it.
8. The Ring
As Lois approaches Clark he says “I’ll take that as a ‘yes’.” Lois asks “what?” and he says “the ring” and then it cuts to a shot of her hand from the funeral. In Batman v Superman, after Clark’s funeral, Clark’s his mother Martha gives Lois an engagement ring. Clark had planned to give her before he died.
He never got the answer to his proposal before he died. But her wearing the ring shows that she has agreed to marry him posthumously. She wakes up and caresses the pillow where he would be sleeping.
9. Newspaper “World Without Hope”
This newspaper headline is a reference to the “World Without Superman” comic book arc from the 1990s. After Superman is killed by Doomsday the comics followed the world trying to deal with the death of Superman.
10. Superman Memorial
Several memorials are shown for Superman in the trailer. Like the giant “S” over the bridge. These are a reference to “Death of Superman” storyline where memorials were set up for his death. Superman: Man of Steel #21 (1991) “Funeral for a Friend” is a good example of this.
11. Superman’s Memorial Plaque
At one point in the trailer, they show a memorial to Superman that says “if you seek his monument look around you”. This was first seen in Batman v Superman when it was surrounded by well-wishers.
The quote is a reference to Sir Christopher Wren’s monument plaque inscription which, when translated from Latin, reads “Reader, if you seek his monument – look around you”.
The movie is really pushing the impact of losing a hero like Superman.
12. Steppenwolf Drops
The big Justice League villain is Steppenwolf. Steppenwolf is a “New God” of the planet Apokolips and the nephew of the tyrant Darkseid. He leads the Apokoliptian soldiers for his uncle. In the comics Steppenwolf is the uncle of Darkseid but they’ve reversed it for the movie.
He was glimpsed in the deleted scene from Batman v Superman and works for Darkseid. We’ve seen him in other trailers and clips before but this is the first to show some of his powers.
13. Amazons Fight
The fleeing soldiers on horseback are the Amazonians from Wonder Woman’s island home of Themyscira. The guys flying after them are Parademons.
A previous trailer shows Queen Hippolyta meeting Steppenwolf. This could be a flashback since a character that died in Wonder Woman has returned to film for Justice League (no spoilers but click on the link if you’re interested).
14. Parademon Transformation
Steppenwolf has an Electro Axe that he hits the ground with and the following shot shows a soldier being transformed into a Parademon.
The Parademons are the elite soldiers of Darkseid. The skin is turning grey and the guy’s sprouting rows of gnarly sharp teeth.
This is a big difference from the comics which has the soldiers volunteer to serve in Darkseid’s army.
15. Diana Knows This Invasion
Diana Prince is looking at artifacts and recognizes something. She says “invasion”. She knows about the invasion by Steppenwolf from when the Amazonians fought them before.
The look on her face shows she knows the threat that Darkseid’s hordes can have on the planet.
16. Batplane
We get a good shot of Batman’s plane from Batman v Superman. He used to infiltrate the warehouse where Lex Luthor held Martha Kent.
Typically Alfred Pennyworth remote controls the plane for Batman. But, later in the movie, Cyborg interfaces with the plane and says, “Don’t worry Alfred. I got this.”
Later on, we see if the massive plane that’s known as “Flying Fox”. It’s been seen the trailers and clips before and is big enough to easily transport the team.
17. Hellspores
We see the cooling tower of a nuclear power plant with objects pouring out of it. Steppenwolf has the job of recovering the three mother boxes but he has a second job as well. To rebuild Earth.
Looking carefully some of the objects are Parademons but not all. In the comics, Darkseid uses the Hellspores to terraform a planet. Each Hellspore creates a giant burning hole down to the Earth’s core. Darkseid has the goal of destroying the planet.
This explains the red color in the fight scenes later on.
18. Cyborg Watching Football
Cyborg is shown in his apartment looking at a hologram. It’s actually photo and video of his old life as a football player. Victor Stone was a high school athlete who’s going pro. He gets in an unexplained accident and his father uses technology to repair his body and save his life.
But the process wasn’t by his choice and he has a lot of bitterness about it. You can also see photos surrounding him reminding him of the life he once had.
Fisher has said that one of the challenges Cyborg has is “staying human”. This might be his way of doing that.
19. Strong Man is Strongest Alone
Aquaman tells Bruce Wayne “A strong man is strongest alone. You ever heard that?” Bruce says, “That’s the opposite of the saying. That’s the opposite of what the saying is.” But he’s wrong.
The quote is from the play Wilhelm Tell by Friedrich von Schiller – Act I, Scene III – which has Tell and Stauff in conversation about responsibility.
Tell. A man can safely count but on himself!
Stauff. Nay, even the weak grow strong by union.
Tell. But the strong man is strongest when alone.
So chalk one up for Aquaman. Who knew he was so cultured?
20. Atlantis
Aquaman gets thrown against an ornate pillar and it’s another look at the underwater city of Atlantis. A previous trailer shows Aquaman fighting Steppenwolf to defend the city.
Principal photography on Aquaman (2018) began in Australia on May 2, 2017, and this is the more footage that shows what it’ll be like.
21. Steppenwolf vs. Wonder Woman
Steppenwolf and Wonder Woman fight and his axe is a match for her shield and sword.
22. Superman Hologram Shows New Costume
Bruce Wayne is in his Bat-Cave looking at a hologram. You can tell from the cape and boots that it’s Superman.
Specifically, it’s Superman’s suit and it looks slightly different from the ones we’ve seen before. The color scheme is brighter and the pattern is different. There have been rumors Superman’s Kryptonian suit is getting a redesign. Could this be Wayne Tech’s new Superman suit?
23. Teamwork
Jason Mamoa is a beast and looks incredible flying around stabbing dudes with his trident. He can’t fly but we see him falling and being saved by Cyborg. He doesn’t run fast and we show him surfing the Bat-Mobile.
We also see Wonder Woman helping Batman and Flash with the assist. They really are stronger together.
24. Secret Identities
Batman, Superman, Flash and Wonder Woman all have secret identities or alter egos. Based on the incarnation of the Justice League sometimes all the League members know the others secrets or some don’t.
Batman v Superman established that Bruce knows all of their identities. Also, Wonder Woman and Batman know each other’s secrets. Batman obviously knows Barry Allen is Flash. It’s complicated but gets more complicated.
In one scene Barry points to the bat-signal and motions to Bruce saying, “That’s the Bat-Signal. That’s you’re…”. He immediately tries to take it back whispering, “That’s your signal. That means we have to go.” Not realizing Diana already knows Bruce is Batman. So at this point in the movie, Barry assumes that no one else knows Bruce is Batman and he doesn’t know Diana is Wonder Woman.
Later Bruce takes them all to the Bat-Cave and reveals everything to them.
25. Acme Chemicals
In the corner of the scene, you can make out a clear Suicide Squad reference. In both Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, they reference Ace Chemicals which is the chemical factory and warehouse where Harley Quinn (and we assume Joker) got their freakish good looks and winning personality.
From comic book references to hidden secrets, the new Justice League trailer is packed with awesome.

Each trailer has gotten better and better. I'm looking forward to this!!!
There was a lot more going on than most people thought. I'm also so looking forward to this. I've waited most of my life for the Justice League to come to life on the big screen.
Unlike BvS it doesn't seem like they've given away 90% of the story in the trailers.
