“Thor Ragnarok” Director Wants the Audience to Have Fun with Thor

Thor: Ragnarok (2017) – Thor (Chris Hemsworth)

A new behind-the-scenes featurette for Thor: Ragnarok gives an inside look into how director Taika Waititi wants to bring some fun to the god of thunder.

Many of the movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) are light-hearted and fun. But lately, the movies have gone to darker places with Captain America: Civil War.

In the clip, actor Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor, says he and Watiti both agreed that Thor needed some attitude.

Hemsworth said, “In this film, we wanted to kind of strip it back and wanted have more fun with it you know. And Taikayka had the exact same idea and we were both saying the exact same thing. For Ragnarok let’s try and have more attitude.”

“Ragnarok is sort of a new cycle of the life of the world of the realms of the universe,” Waititi says, “It’s the destruction of the old and the rebirth of the new and that’s really exciting to me.”

Getting rid of the long hair, the hammer and the Avengers is a gamble, but Hemsworth says that’s where the character needs to go. Bring in different costumes, different weapons, different cast and characters to work to give it “a different energy.”

Mark Ruffalo, who plays Bruce Banner/Hulk,  added, “Thor has been a crisis. He never went back to Asgard to claim the throne. He wanted adventure. When we pick him up he’s at the end of this search for himself.”

“You know I wanted to take people on a ride and inject some comedy into it and adventure that keeps people laughing along the way,” Waititi says. “But it also has the spectacle and stuff that it gets people excited.”

This movie feels completely different from the original Shakespearean grandeur of the first movie. That is really cool and we’ll see how it works.

It's kind of ironic that Ragnarok is supposed to be fun. Nothing about the Norse myth is very fun as it's about the gods all dying.
