Family Ties (Logan) – Dafne Keen, Hugh Jackman |
The new Wolverine movie is all violence, slashing fools and blood thanks to its R rating. But it’s also about family.
From Hugh Jackman’s first appearance in X-Men (2000) Wolverine was a father figure of sorts to Rogue (Anna Paquin). Begrudgingly of course. In his first conversation with her, he plans to leave her alone on the back roads of Alaska. When she asks what she’s supposed to do he says, “I dunno”. But, from the moment he let her back in the truck, he took on the role of protector and father for her. That story arc is complete with Logan (2016).
So, it’s fitting that in the new Wolverine movie he begrudgingly takes in the role of father to a young girl named Laura (Dafne Keen). James Mangold says the Logan movie is all about family.
He said the idea for the movie is partially inspired by the road trip in Little Miss Sunshine. “The relationship between Laura and Logan is going someplace deeply emotional. It’s a movie about fathers and sons, it’s a movie about fathers and daughters,” Mangold said at a New York press event. In the comics, X-23 is a clone but we don’t know for sure if that’s the case in the movie.
What’s the greatest family sitcom in the history of American television? Family Ties of course. The show about a liberal couple raising four children in the heyday of 80s consumerism touched hearts for generations and ran for almost a decade.
That’s why I decided to re-cut the Logan trailer into a Family Ties style opening. Because nothing says family like a movie about a guy and his daughter slicing people up with knives on their hands. Enjoy.
What do you think of the video? What sitcom would Wolverine be best in?
