6 Things We Learn About Kodi Smit-McPhee’s Nightcrawler in XMEN: APOCALYPSE

    Xmen: Apocalypse (2016) – Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee)

See what Nightcrawler will look like in Xmen: Apocalypse! 20th Century Fox released some official images of Nightcrawler on Twitter and there’s quite a bit we can learn from them.

For those who don’t know, Nightcrawler is a mutant named Kurt Wagner who first appeared in Giant-Size X-Men
#1 (1975). He has inhuman agility, dexterity, coordination and balance
which made him a perfect circus performer. His most well-known mutant
power is the ability to teleport leaving behind a smell of “brimstone.”
Back in 2003, he appeared in X2 played by Alan Cumming. This time around he’ll be played by 18-year-old Kodi Smit-McPhee.

    1. Tattoos

The 2003 version was covered with tattoos that had a religious
significance to his character. This matched his comic book origin as a
devout Catholic who saw his mutation as a curse. This time around we
don’t see as many tats. We do see a few on his forehead, but not nearly as many as in the later film. Since this is a prequel to X2, it means Wagner got
himself heavily tattooed later in life.

    2. Michael Jackson Fan

The movie is set in 1983 and that’s the year Michael Jackson’s Thriller album hits #1 on the US charts. It looks like Wagner is a big fan with his jacket inspired by the Thriller version.

    3. Hair

The 80s had some epic mullets, crimped looks, and tons of hairspray and
Nightcrawler is a big fan of the do. His hair doesn’t match a lot of
styles from the 80s, but still kind of matches Uncle Jesse’s hair on Full House. His attempts to match popular styles are a desperate attempt to fit in despite his appearance.

    4. No Gloves or Shoes

    Nightcrawler isn’t covering his
hands or feet with gloves. He’s not trying to cover his bizarre-looking
toes and fingers, which means he’s proud of them.

    5. Two Toes

Another thing to notice is that he only has two toes in front, whereas
the comic version has an extra toe in his heel for grabbing things.
Bryan Singer often changes character designs for his movies and this is
    another one.

    6. Nightcrawler Will Be Fun

     In X2, Nightcrawler was very
sand, angry and violent at times, but Smit-McPhee promises the younger
version will be more light-hearted. “Whereas I think what they’re
trying to show here is the more vulnerable Nightcrawler and the one we
all kind of related to in the comics.” Smit-McPhee told Den of Geek.
“It’s really the fun, happy, swashbuckling Nightcrawler that we all
love, so I really can’t wait to portray that. He’s just very vulnerable
and truthful, and grounded in his faith. I think it’s something new
though that we’ll see. But as I said, all of the traditional things
that we want in it – it’s still there. Hint, hint,”

Here’s what Nightcrawler looked like back in 2003

Here’s what Nightcrawler looks like in the comics

The X-Men: Days of Future Past sequel is directed by Bryan Singer and stars James
McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Evan
Peters, Oscar Isaac, Alexandra Shipp, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Rose
    Byrne, Kodi Smit-McPhee,
Lana Condor, Ben Hardy, Olivia Munn and Lucas Till.

    X-Men Apocalypse opens May 27, 2016 in the U.S.

He is a fun character and that's what was lost in the last film. Hopefully with a prequel they can explore that since Nightcrawler was a jokester in the comics.
