7 Things Learned From the ALMOST HUMAN 8 Minute Preview

Almost Human (2013), Dorian (Michael Ealy)

Watch the first 8 minutes of J.J. Abrams’ Almost Human and learn some amazing things about the show.

I’m excited about an upcoming science fiction cop show, starring the African-American actor Michael Ealy, and the first eight minutes are online.

Here’s the official synopsis: ALMOST HUMAN is a high-tech, high-stakes action drama set 35 years in the future, when police officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids. An unlikely partnership is forged when a part-machine cop (Karl Urban) is forced to pair with a part-human robot (Michael Ealy) as they fight crime and investigate a deeper cover-up in a futuristic new world.

The original premiere date for Almost Human was supposed to be 8 p.m. ET on Nov. 4, but Fox moved it to capitalize on the football lead-in saying, “There’s a football double-header that Sunday afternoon that could serve up a huge lead-in to sample the new show.” Almost Human will now open with a two-night event on Sunday, Nov. 17 and Monday, Nov. 18. That shows a lot of confidence in the show since changing the air-date two weeks before it’s scheduled is risky and confusing.

Now they released a section from the opener as a teaser to try and build buzz. Watch the clip from Hulu and read about a few things I learned from watching it.

    1. John is a Bionic Man and Hates It

John Kennex (Karl Urban) has synthetic parts and he hates them. In the movie I, Robot Will Smith’s character has bionic replacements for his arm and hates them along with all robots. According to Kennex’ psychological profile he has “psychological rejection of his synthetic body parts.” We know he has a synthetic leg, but it would be much cooler if he has a super-strong bionic arm. Notice it says “parts.” He has a bunch of synthetic body parts. We’ll probably find out more as the show progresses.

    2. 911 is a Joke

Captain Maldonado (Lili Taylor) says she only trusts John. That means the level of corruption in the police force must be pretty bad. Otherwise she’d just fire everyone she didn’t trust. So, she can’t.

    3. The Ambush

Several references are made to “The Ambush” which was an attack made against the police department by a shadowy organization called “The Syndicate.” The Syndicate has access to advanced weapons and are behind a daring armored truck robbery. These guys are not your average criminals.

    4. John Kennex Has Tony Stark Levels of PTSD

Just like Tony Stark in Iron Man 3, Kennex suffers from extreme depression and PTSD. In one scene he starts having flashbacks to the Ambush. He tries to hide it, but his robot partner picks up on it.

    5. Robot Partners Suck

Cops are all assigned robot partners, known as MX, that provide intelligence and combat support. John hates them. While they try very hard to be nice, they know too much for their own good. So John pushes his partner out the car door.

    6. Stop Watching Us!

If you think the NSA spying program is bad, then you’ll hate the future. They have enough surveillance to tell what Kennex was doing in his off-hours and do remote breath tests.

    7. Dorian is Insane in the Membrane

When Kennex goes to see Rudy Lom (Mackenzie Crook) he talks about the DRN model being “crazy.” Lom explains the model was made with a “synthetic soul” which made them emotive. So they have the same psychological problems that we do. Poor guy.

The show airs as a two-part episode on Sunday, Nov. 17 and Monday, Nov. 18 at 8PM ET. Make sure you catch it and follow our blog to learn more about the show Almost Human.

What do you think of the clip? Did you learn anything cool while watching it? Would you want to live in this future?
