Geek Bits: Is David Hasselhoff the Best Nick Fury? Plus More [Links]

Who thinks David Hasselhoff made a better Nick Fury? How can you turn your loved ones into Batman? Did Jamie Foxx blow the ending of The Amazing Spider-Man 2? What would Darth Vader be like if he had Young Anakin’s voice?

Find out in this week’s top 10 geekiest bits of the Internet.

    10.
David Hasselhoff Says His Nick Fury Was Better Than Samuel L. Jackson’s (via /Film)

Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson, David Haselhoff)

In an interview with Yahoo, actor David Hasselhoff said he was “the first Nick Fury” referring to the terrible made-for-TV movie Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. (1998). Hasselhoff said, “Stan Lee  put me in that. He gave me the best line ever: ‘Guys like you tend to cling to the bowl no matter how many times you flush.’ Stan Lee came on the set and told me all about Nick. He said ‘You’re the ultimate Nick Fury’. He gave me the greatest compliment ever.”

When asked what he thought of Samuel L. Jackson’s performance in Marvel’s The Avengers he said, “You know, it wasn’t Nick Fury. They take these shows and they make it the way they want to make it and unfortunately, they should have had Stan Lee on the set and let him kick him into gear – whoever directed [The Avengers] decided they wanted to go that way. But it’s their prerogative. He’s still a great actor.”

Oddly enough, much like Adam West in Batman (1989), he was hoping to get the role  in the Avengers film. “I was hoping to have played him in the movie,” Hasselhoff added. “And then Samuel L. Jackson came in and he was a great Nick Fury but he wasn’t really the consummate Nick Fury, the way he was written. And I think that’s a shame because he’s a great character and a funny character…I’m hoping to do it again sometime.”

The next day he back-tracked on his Samuel L. Jackson diss. “Set the record straight..Samuel Jackson is one of my favorite actors, a friend and I wish him well in all his roles,” he tweeted, “especially Nick Fury !”

    9. Game: Give Your Phone Contacts Geeky Photos(via Closet Geek Girl)

Jessica was bored the other day and decided to “take all of the contacts in my phone and change their photo icons to Superheroes/villains. This turned out to be ultra fun!” Her husband became Batman and “That cry baby guy” that she must deal with became Catwoman. I did a slightly different game of using Star Trek characters (ex. Nigel became Spock). What images would you put for your contacts?

    8. Quiet Revolution [Review: Robot And Frank] (via The Sci-Fi Gene)

This is a great review of the Frank Langella film about an elderly bank robber who “befriends” his robot butler to help him start back up his career. This one is in my “must-watch” list.

    7. The Twilight Zone – “A Stop at Willoughby”(via Vic’s Movie Den)

A review of that classic Twilight Zone episode “A Stop at Willoughby” with the line “Willoughby, sir? That’s Willoughby right outside. It’s July. It’s summer. It’s 1888.”

    6. Jamie Foxx Seems To Spoil The Amazing Spider-Man 2 While Setting The Stage For The Sinister Six(via Bleeding Cool)

I’m not going to quote the spoiler, but he may have given away the biggest spoiler for the film’s ending. If you follow the link, try not to spoil it in the comments. I’m sure his PR rep had a heart-attack.

    5. A Gotham Fairytale (via Blah Blah Blah Yackity Smackity)

“A Gotham Fairytale” is an original Batman story done as an animatic set to Muse’s “Knights of Cydonia.” Composed of over 200 black and white illustrations, it depicts the dark imagination of a little girl as she’s listening to her grandmother tell her a bedtime fairy tale

    4. Little Anakin Voices Darth Vader in STAR WARS Parody (via GeekTyrant)

“Here’s a ridiculous yet entertaining parody that replaces Darth Vader’s voice with the voice and dialogue from stupid young Anakin (Jake Lloyd).”

    3. Ben Affleck Finally Comments On Playing BATMAN(via Comic Book Movie)

On Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Affleck did an interview and around 1:43 said, “It’s so awesome, I’m so excited. They called me up and said ‘do you want to do this’, and I’m like, ‘I’m not 25 man are you sure?’. So they said to come down and we’ll show you what we’re doing, and it was incredible. Zack has this incredible take on it..obviously we can’t do what Christian (Bale) did, those movies are amazing, so he wants to do something different but still in keeping with that.”

    2. Star Wars Toys: Now & Then(Fortress Geek)

My brother did a post on the commercial for the 1978 Star Wars light saber and now Fortress Geek has an infographic comparing Star Wars toys from the past with the present.

    1. Agent Coulson S.H.I.E.L.D. Badge for Sale (via /Film)

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. starts next week, and EFX Collectibles is releasing this S.H.I.E.L.D. badge at New York Comic-Con.

Hasselhoff is really full of himself. Someone recently posted about a Con where he was the only one charging to hear him speak. The promoters eventually made his talk free because no one signed up.
Need to check out Robot and Frank.

    2. DAVID WALSTON on September 20, 2013 2:37 pm

Great links as always! Thanks for the shout out.
I stopped paying attention to Hasselhoff after Knight Rider.
I can see Nigel becoming Spock.
I had all the original Star Wars toys except the Lightsaber. Mine was plastic and made noise by moving it around and having air go through it. It was Vaders.

    3. Pat Dilloway on September 20, 2013 2:46 pm

I'd like to hear Samuel L Jackson's reaction to those comments. I'm sure that would be priceless and involve a lot of f-bombs.

    4. Maurice Mitchell on September 20, 2013 3:39 pm

I've been to a couple of cons but would never pay for a panel, much less for Hoff. Yeah Alex, his career has taken a strange turn. First, he's a megastar.  Then he's a has-been but a German megastar.  Then he's a TV star. Then he's a has-been. Now he's just a parody. I think he's got talent but needs to embrace that he's a joke and play with that image.

    5. Maurice Mitchell on September 20, 2013 3:41 pm

Thanks David! I think I remember that one but it could have PVC pipe. We've come a long way baby.

    6. Maurice Mitchell on September 20, 2013 3:44 pm

Me too Pat. I did a Google search but haven't heard anything yet. "I'm tired of this mother-f***ing Hoff, in this mother-f***ing Avengers!"

    7. Tony Laplume on September 21, 2013 12:08 pm

Hilarious that the Hoff is apparently completely unaware that Sam Jackson has been playing Nick Fury for years now.

    8. Tony Laplume on September 21, 2013 12:11 pm

It would behoove him to find another TV show, try for another icon. He's one of those people who keeps stumbling into these things and doesn't seem to understand that. He'll never be a great actor (or great singer, despite what Germans think), and certainly not an icon himself.
