At Comic-Con 2012, a panel called Starship Smackdown debated which was the best fictional spaceship of all time. The debate came down to the original Enterprise NCC 1701 from Star Trek. In defense of the ship came a surprise guest, noted astrophysicist and uber-geek Neil deGrasse Tyson. He made an argument that blew everyone away. Click to watch the video below.

true… beautiful and seductive… hot as love… i so need to watch the day the earth stood still…
He makes a good point. Nothing else was like it at the time. Guess the original wins then!
That's kind of the opposite of the argument I'm trying to make about Star Trek. I think it's time to drag ourselves away from the thinking of the original fans, and start taking a wider, more current perspective. And strangely enough, I would still make an argument that the original Enterprise is absolutely classic, indispensable element of franchise and overall sci-fi lore.
A star destroyer would totally trash the Enterprise in a fight.
I love the original Enterprise, but I LOVE the new movie. I want another one!!
