Red Dawrf, the cult science-fiction comedy from BBC is returning after almost ten years off the air. The show, which ran on BBC Two from 1988 and 1999 was a hit with eight million viewers in more than 25 countries. The show, set three million years in the future, followed the slovenly slacker Dave Lister (Craig Charles) as the last man in the universe trying to get back to Earth along with his annoying holographic roommate Arnold Rimmer (Chris Barrie), his evolved egotistical pet Cat (Danny John-Jules), and his subservient mechanoid Kryten (Robert Llewellyn). Nicknamed the “Dave Specials” (for the channel) the two-part series will be called “Red Dwarf: Back to Earth”.

It’s been a decade since we last saw the crew of Red Dwarf, but while they may be older they’re
still none the wiser.When Lister’s busy day of annoying Rimmer is interrupted by a monstrous attack, it’s pretty much
business as usual – until a shock development throws Rimmer, Lister, Cat and Kryten back to
planet Earth..
Talk of a movie version of the show has been in the works for almost as
long as its been off the air, but now pre-production has begun on the
new specials with the original cast airing four nights from Friday, April 10th 2009.
This is great news since I’ve seen every episode about a thousand times. There’s no word on how we Americans can get to watch it, but I’m sure there will be a way. Maybe even a DVD?

Awesome news. Hope the movies air here, although I’m not sure I want to see what Earth is like.
In the “Red Dwarf” novel, Earth was a gigantic garbage dump for the rest of the Galaxy. Wonder if they’ll keep that idea for the movies.
