Every year, the Super Bowl isn’t just the biggest night in football — it’s also the biggest stage in Hollywood marketing. Studios spend millions to debut exclusive footage, turning Super Bowl commercials into must-watch events for movie fans, especially when it comes to epic sci-fi trailers packed with spaceships, superheroes, and jaw-dropping visual effects. Some of these spots instantly become iconic, fueling hype and ticket sales for months, while others fizzle out despite the prime-time spotlight. We know Marvel skipped the Big Game, but there are plenty of other surprises.
We haven’t done a ranking since 2019, so we’re overdue. From unforgettable first looks at blockbuster franchises to baffling misfires that left audiences cold, we’re ranking the best and worst Super Bowl sci-fi trailers to see which truly delivered spectacle—and which wasted their moment.

What Makes a Great Super Bowl Sci-Fi Trailer?
A Super Bowl sci-fi trailer isn’t just another TV spot — it’s a high-stakes cultural moment squeezed into 30-seconds of airtime where brands and studios compete for the biggest spotlight in advertising. The trailers that rise above the rest tend to share a few key qualities:
Visual Spectacle & Immersive Imagery
Sci-fi thrives on visual imagination — from futuristic tech and alien worlds to epic space battles and cutting-edge effects. A memorable Super Bowl sci-fi trailer uses stunning visuals to immediately hook viewers, giving just enough to spark curiosity without revealing everything. Teaser trailers in particular are built to tease and tantalize, often with cryptic or curiosity-inducing imagery that leaves audiences wanting more.
Storytelling That Sparks Curiosity
Even within a brief window, a great trailer suggests a narrative arc — a conflict, mystery, or promise that invites viewers into a larger story. Rather than dumping plot points, the most effective teasers hint at something bigger, intriguing viewers and encouraging them to seek out the full trailer or film.
Emotional or Cultural Resonance
Trailers that connect — whether through humor, awe, nostalgia, or sheer cinematic promise — tend to stick. Just as classic Super Bowl commercials become cultural reference points, a trailer that evokes a strong emotional or cultural tug is more likely to spark conversation and social sharing.
Surprise and Originality
The Super Bowl crowd has seen it all — so standing out matters. Unexpected twists, bold concepts, or fresh takes on familiar sci-fi tropes help a trailer cut through the noise. Whether it’s a clever reimagining of a franchise or an entirely new universe teased imaginatively, originality earns attention.
Viral Potential Beyond Broadcast
Today’s biggest hits don’t end with the TV broadcast. Great trailers are designed to explode online, with shareable moments that trend on social platforms and drive views on YouTube and beyond. Studios often tease clips pregame or release extended versions afterward to maximize engagement across channels.
In the crowded and expensive world of Super Bowl advertising, the trailers that succeed are the ones that blend storytelling, spectacle, and shareability — turning a fleeting 30 seconds into a launchpad for buzz that lasts long after kickoff.
The Worst Sci-Fi Trailers & Commercials
The Mandalorian & Grogu
The first bad trailer is also the most anticipated. The trailer leans into the space western theme by making a commercial with the feel of the classic Budweiser spots. Instead of horses, they’re Taun-Tauns. In the upcoming months, Mandalorian & Grogu will undoubtedly receive a more significant marketing push, but the unexpected advertisement that was unveiled last night wasn’t it. Like the other game spots, it has the feel and appearance of a late-holiday commercial and fails to provide a clear answer to the question “What is this movie about? Why should I care?”
Supergirl
Second, we have the new Supergirl spot. Since it first aired during the Puppy Bowl instead of the actual Super Bowl, this is kind of cheating. It felt like a lost chance to remind viewers that Krypto is more than just a dog—he’s just as unpredictable as his master. Aside from showing the tiny infant Krypto, the advertisement was a typical one that used footage from its debut teaser.
The Best Sci-Fi Trailers
Hoppers
Pixar has had its ups and downs lately, but this body-swapping movie looks like a hit. Moving away from sequels, Pixar’s “robotic beaver” concept has gone viral. “Tom the Lizard” has already become a massive meme on TikTok, making this the most shared animated spot of the night.
Super Mario Galaxy
The first on our best Super Bowl spot list is Super Mario Galaxy. With an ad the night before the Super Bowl and another the day before, Nintendo and Illumination took a double dip this weekend. Fortunately, both of them have plenty to offer. Whether you prefer the younger Mario and Luigi or just want to see Yoshi devour and egg his enemies.
Project Hail Mary
Following that, we have Project Hail Mary. Compared to most of the movies that went to the big game, this one had its own trailer, and it looks amazing. This one is even better than the first one. It would be easy enough to sell Ryan Gosling in space with an extraterrestrial friend, but the scale and scenery are just the cherry on top. Every time we find out more about it, the harder it is not to geek out over it.
Disclosure Day
The biggest trailer of the Super Bowl is for Disclosure Day. This trailer keeps the eerie croaking noises and ominous curiosity that were present in the earlier one. This would still be a fantastic tease of how fascinating it is without taking pride in its own mystery, even if it hadn’t given us a tiny hint of an alien ship landing on Earth. It believes it has the goods; come July, we’ll find out if that’s the case.
Whether they launch billion-dollar franchises or disappear into meme history, Super Bowl sci-fi trailers remain one of the most powerful — and risky — marketing plays in entertainment. The right 30 seconds can electrify fandom and dominate social media, but a weak reveal can stall excitement before a movie even hits theaters. That’s what makes revisiting these trailers so fascinating: they’re time capsules of hype, ambition, and sometimes overreach.
