The Worst Sci-Fi Trailers & Commercials

The Mandalorian & Grogu

The first bad trailer is also the most anticipated. The trailer leans into the space western theme by making a commercial with the feel of the classic Budweiser spots. Instead of horses, they’re Taun-Tauns.  In the upcoming months, Mandalorian & Grogu will undoubtedly receive a more significant marketing push, but the unexpected advertisement that was unveiled last night wasn’t it. Like the other game spots, it has the feel and appearance of a late-holiday commercial and fails to provide a clear answer to the question “What is this movie about? Why should I care?”

Supergirl

Second, we have the new Supergirl spot. Since it first aired during the Puppy Bowl instead of the actual Super Bowl, this is kind of cheating. It felt like a lost chance to remind viewers that Krypto is more than just a dog—he’s just as unpredictable as his master. Aside from showing the tiny infant Krypto, the advertisement was a typical one that used footage from its debut teaser.

The Best Sci-Fi Trailers

Hoppers

Pixar has had its ups and downs lately, but this body-swapping movie looks like a hit. Moving away from sequels, Pixar’s “robotic beaver” concept has gone viral. “Tom the Lizard” has already become a massive meme on TikTok, making this the most shared animated spot of the night.

Super Mario Galaxy

The first on our best Super Bowl spot list is Super Mario Galaxy. With an ad the night before the Super Bowl and another the day before, Nintendo and Illumination took a double dip this weekend. Fortunately, both of them have plenty to offer. Whether you prefer the younger Mario and Luigi or just want to see Yoshi devour and egg his enemies.

Project Hail Mary

Following that, we have Project Hail Mary. Compared to most of the movies that went to the big game, this one had its own trailer, and it looks amazing. This one is even better than the first one. It would be easy enough to sell Ryan Gosling in space with an extraterrestrial friend, but the scale and scenery are just the cherry on top. Every time we find out more about it, the harder it is not to geek out over it.

Disclosure Day

The biggest trailer of the Super Bowl is for Disclosure Day. This trailer keeps the eerie croaking noises and ominous curiosity that were present in the earlier one. This would still be a fantastic tease of how fascinating it is without taking pride in its own mystery, even if it hadn’t given us a tiny hint of an alien ship landing on Earth. It believes it has the goods; come July, we’ll find out if that’s the case.
