Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Connelly, and Alice Braga star in an Apple Original series based on Blake Crouch’s best-selling novel.
To start with, this Dark Matter show has nothing to do with the beloved Syfy series of the same name, which concluded in 2017. This new series is based on Blake Crouch’s 2016 novel Dark Matter, and even while the title isn’t wholly original, it’s a good sign that it’s coming from Apple TV+, which has a history of producing sci-fi shows that people get obsessed with. Shows like Foundation, Severance, and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
The first trailer for the series was released last week. It stars Joel Edgerton as a Chicago guy who has to journey through several dimensions—some very hostile ones—and adopt an alter ego to get back to his family. The remaining cast members include Oakes Fegley, Jimmi Simpson, and Dayo Okeniyi.

Not even his favorite bartender knows who he is! It’s horrible news, as you know. This seems to be a fairly true adaptation if you’ve read the book by Crouch, who authored the original script for the Wayward Pines series a few years ago. Crouch is listed as the “creator, executive producer, showrunner, and writer.” Matt Tolmach, David Manpearl, and Joel Edgerton are also listed as executive producers.
The official description reads:
“Hailed as one of the best sci-fi novels of the decade, ‘Dark Matter’ is a story about the road not taken. The series will follow Jason Dessen (played by Edgerton), a physicist, professor, and family man who — one night while walking home on the streets of Chicago — is abducted into an alternate version of his life. Wonder quickly turns to nightmare when he tries to return to his reality amid the mind-bending landscape of lives he could have lived. In this labyrinth of realities, he embarks on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family and save them from the most terrifying, unbeatable foe imaginable: himself.”
