Here are the biggest stories for Friday, June 30, 2023. Alan Arkin dies at 89 and a new Dune trailer introduces the Emperor. Meanwhile, James Mangold plans a Swamp Thing movie, and Samuel L. Jackson teases Fury Vs. Val.

We can’t always cover everything. So here’s everything you missed this morning. In Case You Missed It (ICYMI).

    Warning: May contain spoilers!

    1. Alan Arkin, Virtuoso Comic Actor With a Serious Side, Dies at 89 | Hollywood Reporter

Alan Arkin, a versatile actor who won an Oscar for Little Miss Sunshine, has passed away at 89. His sons, Adam, Matthew, and Anthony, announced the news in a joint statement. Arkin was a talented artist and man, known for his comic, chilling, and charming turns. He was a loving husband, father, grand, and great-grandfather, and will be deeply missed. Arkin was among the oldest to win the supporting actor award at age 72. He’s best known for Little Miss but he played a memorable role in science-fiction movies too. They include Detective Hugo in Gattaca (1997), a suburbanite in Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands (1990), and a wise mentor in The Rocketeer (1991). He will be missed.

    2. New ‘Dune: Part Two’ Trailer Introduces Christopher Walken’s Emperor | Heroic Hollywood

In the new trailer for Dune: Part Two, Chani, a Fremen warrior, declares a prophecy that will turn Paul into the Muad’Dib messiah. The prophecy was hinted at in 2021’s Dune: Part One, where Paul’s mother, Jessica, is informed by her coven’s matriarch that a path has been laid for him on Arrakis. The trailer reveals that Paul takes on an almost godlike image in the eyes of the Fremen, who worship him by the millions. The film also introduces the Fremen desert culture, where a Bene Gesserit space-witch landed on Arrakis centuries ago and indoctrinated the local population into a new religion. The film also introduces Lisan al Gaib, an Off-Worlder prophet who will deliver them from toil and create a green paradise. The trailer suggests that the story will expand from the perspective of the oppressors to those who are oppressed, potentially departing further from Frank Herbert’s novels.

    3. James Mangold Has a Plan for Swamp Thing | Gizmodo

James Mangold expressed excitement about directing a ” noir-mystery-horror” Swamp Thing movie for DC. He mentioned that DC’s leadership crisis led him to consider making a gothic horror film with the origin story of Swamp Thing. Mangold compared the idea to Frankenstein, a popular pop film, and envisioned a horror-noir film following a creature that cannot be seen. He compared the film to Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson’s work in comics, framing it in a new movie context. The campy Swamp Thing movies from the 80s tried to do something like this but it’s tricky to pull off. But if anyone can do it it’s Mangold.

    4. ‘Invasion’ Gets Season 2 Premiere Date At Apple; First-Look Photos | Deadline

Apple TV+ is set to premiere Season 2 of the sci-fi series Invasion, created by Simon Kinberg and David Weil. The 10-episode second season will premiere on August 23, with new episodes every Wednesday through October 25. The series follows an alien invasion and it’s escalating attacks against humans. The show stars Golshifteh Farahani, Shioli Kutsuna, Shamier Anderson, India Brown, Billy Barratt, Azhy Robertson, Paddy Holland, and Tara Moayedi. Executive producers include Audrey Chon, David Witz, Alik Sakharov, Andrew Baldwin, and Katie O’Connell Marsh.

Now if they can just convince people to subscribe to Apple+…

    5. ‘Secret Invasion’ Star Samuel L. Jackson Teases Nick Fury Vs. Val In The MCU | Heroic Hollywood

Secret Invasion follows Nick Fury’s return to the Skrulls, and Samuel L. Jackson teases a confrontation with Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine in the future Marvel Cinematic Universe. Jackson revealed a conversation with Dreyfus about a potential conflict between the two characters, but it’s unclear if they will ever clash.

    6. SnyderVerse Fans Protest ‘Superman: Legacy’ Recasting On Twitter | Heroic Hollywood

SnyderVerse fans are protesting the recasting of Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel in Superman: Legacy on Twitter. Cavill’s Superman character was the first to kick off SnyderVerse, and fans are upset about the decision. The Cult of Zack Snyder fans already started using pathetic hashtags like #HenryCavillIsSuperman and #BringBackHenryCavill. They are also using the even more preposterous #FireJamesGunn hashtag. Their #RestoreTheSnydercut campaign successfully released the film after years of being locked in a vault. But these campaigns are just sad. Warner Bros is moving on from the disastrous DCEU films and they’re not kicking Corenswet, James Gunn, or Peter Safran out anytime soon.

    7. Skeleton Crew: Jude Law and co-creator Chris Ford tease the upcoming Star Wars series | Joblo

Recently Jude Law, who stars in the upcoming animated series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, dropped a little info about his role. The series is about a group of 10-year-old kids who accidentally get lost in the Star Wars galaxy. The series aims to be an adventure-like adventure, with a fun tone and potential danger. The new Star Wars show is targeting a younger audience, but the creators aim for it to be for all ages.

Jude Law’s character remains a mystery. “I can’t tell you very much about my character,” he said. “He is someone the children meet on their attempt to get home. He is like a lot of the world that they experience: contradictory, and at times a place of nurture and other times a place of threat.” The story will be told through the eyes of its young characters, played by Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Kyriana Kratter, Robert Timothy Smith, and Ryan Kiera Armstrong. The series is expected to hit Disney+ later this year.

    8. Gattaca Reboot Among Four Series Scrapped at Showtime | TV Line

Showtime has scrapped four series, including a planned series adaptation of the 1997 sci-fi film Gattaca set in a future world filled with biologically superior humans born free of genetic defects. Executive producers Alex Gansa and Howard Gordon were attached, with Gansa set to serve as showrunner. This movie is amazing, so it’s heartbreaking to hear the series was even being created in the same breath that it’s been scuttled.

    9. Warner Bros. Is Starting to Fix Max’s Dreadful Creator Credits | Gizmodo

Warner Bros. has made some progress in public relations, with HBO Max’s relaunch addressing a problem with a flat ” creator” tab on the streamer. This made it difficult for audiences to differentiate between directors, producers, writers, and other creatives. The streamer apologized for the issue but is now adjusting the ” technical transition” from HBO Max to Max. The creator’s section on individual movie and TV show episode pages will now denote different credits for directors, writers, producers, and source material. This is a small improvement for a studio struggling with bad news. Now if only they could find a way to save The Flash from its box office failures…

Snyderverse fans are pathetic. They need to just get over it and move on, but DC giving them the “Snyder Cut” emboldened them, but the failure of The Flash was the final nail in its coffin. Time to move on.

Arkin was great in a lot of things though I loved him in Little Miss Sunshine and Argo. “Ar go f*** yourself!” On the Rifftrax app there’s this weird short film he directed starring two of his kids called “People Soup.”

DC has been trying to making “Swamp Thing” happen for a while so Mangold might get his chance. I just don’t find the character very interesting except in a supporting role but horror comics aren’t really my thing. I have the Rifftrax of the live “Return of Swamp Thing” show last year which was pretty awful. But a couple of the producers (Uslan and Melecher or whatever the spelling is) produced DC movies like the Nolan Batman and Snyderverse movies.
