BBC Canceling ‘Doctor Who’ For Movie Reboot [Television]

When I heard they were cutting Doctor Who down to a half season I couldn’t imagine why. Turns out their ditching the whole show to make a movie. This makes me pretty mad.

David Yates is set to direct according to Variety. “We’re looking at writers now.” He said, “We’re going to spend two to three years to get it right. It needs quite a radical transformation to take it into the bigger arena.”

The show, about a time-and-space-traveling British dude, is the most successful science-fiction show ever running from 1963 to 1989, and 2005 to present. Why in the world would they cancel such an amazing show to turn it into a movie?

Now, no one’s saying the show’s being canceled. But, it’s not hard to connect the dots. Earlier this year we reported that the show is having its next two seasons cut. So, what are the odds the movie will tie into the show? Zero.

Not only are they making a movie, but it will be a reboot of the entire series. “Russell T. Davies and then Steven Moffat have done their own transformations, which were fantastic, but we have to put that aside and start from scratch,” Yates said.

There’s also the issue of the regenerations. He can only regenerate 11 times before dying according to Doctor Who lore. Matt Smith is Doctor number eleven. Either they do something to break to rules like The Master did or they have to cancel the show anyway.

So, all the rumors about the show being canceled are true. What bugs me is the back-handed way they are canceling the series. Instead of BBC coming out and saying it will be canceled, they start taking steps to cancel Doctor Who and hid it from the fans. It sucks.

What do you think of the news? How would you feel if Doctor Who were canceled? Would you watch a big-screen version of the show?

Typical corporate shortsightedness. Piss off the fans, who are the reason the show exists, and they won't support the movie. Then it falls flat, the whole thing goes south, and we move on to other shows.

Richard, you're right. It's the fans that make a movie like this succeed. Remember the X-Files movie?
