Dying Trekker Sees “Star Trek Into Darkness” Early [Movies]

Here’s your feel-good story of the day: Thanks to a lot of help, a dying Trekker managed to see Star Trek Into Darkness on Saturday. It all started on Reddit, where a user named 1deeyut posted a desperate plea for his 41-year old friend Dan to see Star Trek Into Darkness. Apparently, Dan is at the end of a long bout with cancer. After going through chemo and a bone marrow transplant, his doctors discovered an entirely different tumor, and Dan only has weeks to live. His dying wish was to see Star Trek Into Darkness before he died. Of course, there’s the slight little technical hiccup due to the fact that the movie isn’t due to be released until May. The final cut isn’t even finished yet.

The initial goal was to get him the nine minute preview that screened before showings of the IMAX 3D version of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Since Dan couldn’t go to the theaters, the hope was that someone could get him the nine minutes to see from the hospital. Well, thanks to the support of the Reddit community, and Kiggle from Trekmovie tweeting Bad Robot, the unexpected happened. Director J.J. Abrams himself called Dan’s wife to tell him that he would make his dream come true. Just days later, on December 29, Abrams screened a rough cut of Star Trek Into Darkness just for Dan and his family.

While Dan is bound to secrecy about the movie, the word is that he loved it – thankfully. I mean, how much would that suck if the Star Trek community went through all that, and he went, “Eh, it was okay. I thought it dragged in spots. Too many plotholes. I give it one-and-a-half stars.”

In related news, hospitals throughout the country have been flooded with Star Trek fans who all claim to be dying, and whose last wish is to see “Star Trek Into Darkness.”

What did you think of the story?

It's like the real life version of "Fanboys" where the dying kid got to see Episode I before anyone else. Good they made it happen. That wouldn't be my last request movie that's for sure.

It's too bad that Dan has so little time left, but I'm glad he got his wish. And "Fanboys" immediately came to mind when I read this.

Now that was a really nice thing to do. And yes, would've been awful if the movie hadn't been any good.

That is an awesome story in a season full of heart-wrenching tragedies. Good on Mr. Abrams!
