Here Are All the Records ‘Jurassic World’ Broke This Weekend

Jurassic World (2015) – Indominus Rex

    Jurassic World broke 11 box
office records in one weekend. Nick Carpou, Universal’s president of
domestic distribution, said, “It is extraordinary. The film has
resonated with audiences around the world.” The movie about the dinosaur theme park making a genetically engineered hybrid that escapes wowed movie-goers this last weekend. Everyone expected it to be
big, but no one expected Jurassic World
to dominate the box office and become the first film to make over half
a billion dollars worldwide in it’s opening weekend.

    Here are all the
    other stunning box office numbers.

June opening weekend (U.S. and Canada)

In 2013, Man of Steel brought in $116.6 million but Jurassic World’s marketing was bullet-proof at $204.6 million.

Universal Pictures opening weekend (U.S. and Canada)

Universal is having a great year since Furious 7 held the title of the studio’s biggest hit months ago at $147 million, but Jurassic World crushed the record at $204.6 million

June opening day (U.S. and Canada)

It took five years for a movie to knock The Twilight Saga: Eclipse out of the record for biggest opening day in June at $68.5 million. Jurassic World took a bite out of Twilight at $82.8 million.

Premium large formats opening (U.S. and Canada)

Avengers: Age of Ultron had the biggest premium large format opening at $13.1 million, but Jurassic World had no strings and pulled ahead at $16.2 million.

Universal Thursday night showings (U.S. and Canada)

Furious 7 again had a great Thursday showing with $15.8 million, but Jurassic World zoomed past  that record too at $18.5 million.

    IMAX opening (U.S. and Canada)

Christopher Nolan made a big push for his filming The Dark Knight Rises in IMAX format and that led to a $19 million record, but Jurassic World took control and crushed it with $20.6 million.

RealD 3D opening (U.S. and Canada)

48 percent of domestic audiences went for the 3D showing of Jurassic World and that led to it pushing Marvel’s first Avengers movie out of the top spot of $70 million with $71 million.

Theater average – wide release (U.S. and Canada)

Universal Pictures and Legendary co-financed the $150 million, PG-13 rated film and the movie averaged $47,871 which beat The Avengers back in 2012 at $47,698 per theater.

    Worldwide opening

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 held the record in 2011 for $483 million, but Jurassic World had the magic at $511 million.

    Worldwide IMAX opening

The movie was shown on a record 800 screens which broke the previous IMAX record of 100 screens for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Indominus Rex knocked Iron Man 3 out of the top spot for IMAX openings at $28 million.

    Overseas IMAX opening

Transformers: Age of Extinction was the big overseas IMAX opening last year at $16.7 million, but Jurassic World proved that genetically engineered dinosaurs beat robot dinosaurs at $23 million.

Why do you think Jurassic World broke box office records? Does it deserve the top spot?

It had two things going for it – dinosaur franchise and Chris Pratt.
If you saw my review today, I don't think it deserved it.

Of course some of those should probably have an asterisk with higher ticket prices.
