Last month we wrote an extensively researched article predicting the Oscar wins for Marvel Studios. So how did we do?

Of the 8 nominations, Marvel won three for Black Panther and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. This is a huge achievement and marks a milestone in the studio’s history. They’ve been making movies for over a decade and never won a golden trophy.

Let’s run the wins and losses starting from the most to the least surprising.

    1. BEST SOUND EDITING, BLACK PANTHER – Lost

Of all the awards I thought this was the most likely but the musical Bohemian Rhapsody won. This was a huge shock, especially because industry veteran Benjamin Burt (Star Wars) worked on it.

    2. BEST ORIGINAL SCORE, BLACK PANTHER – Won

This one was the most surprising to me since the competition was steep. I had this as #6 and predicted If Beale Street Could Talk would win. But in the end, Ludwig Goransson beat Terence Blanchard (BlacKkKlansman), Nicholas Britell (If Beale Street Could Talk), Alexandre Desplat (Isle of Dogs), and Marc Shaiman (Mary Poppins Returns).

    3. BEST COSTUME DESIGN, BLACK PANTHER – Won

Anyone who’s seen the movie can attest that this movie is a visual feast for costume design. Ruth E. Carter won and it’s well-deserved. No disrespect to the other designers but this movie set a new standard for costume design in Africa or anywhere else.

    4. Best Production Design, Black Panther – Won

This movie was number four on my list and it’s no surprise at all that it won. The movie is gorgeous from top to bottom.

    5. BEST PICTURE, BLACK PANTHER – Lost

I listed this at number two on our list. A lot of people are upset about The Green Book winning Best Picture. BlacKkKlansman director Spike Lee even tried to walk out of the ceremony. It was always a long-shot that a superhero movie would win the Best Picture award but it was a heavy favorite. It’s disappointing but there’s always Black Panther 2.

    6. BEST ORIGINAL SONG, “ALL THE STARS” BLACK PANTHER – Lost

I had this at number five on our list but said “Shallow” by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper was the favorite. Too bad because this song is fire. but R&B and Hip-Hop songs rarely make it on Oscar night.

    7. BEST SOUND MIXING, BLACK PANTHER – Lost

I had this one listed as the “Most unlikely” on the list so it’s no surprise that Black Panther lost this one.

    8. BEST VISUAL EFFECTS, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR – Lost

While technical awards are Marvel’s strong suit this one was always a longshot for me. While Avengers 3 was more fantastical the special effects in First Man were more impressive in recreating life. That can be hard to do. Space movies like Interstellar and Gravity have won Visual Effects before, so no surprises here.

Runner-Up: Best Animated Feature Film – Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

For some reason, I left off Spider-Verse from our original list. But I always anticipated a win. So no surprise. It’s a great movie.

I’m happy that I predicted a few of the wins and I’m looking forward to all the awards Marvel is nominated for next year!
